The Hōrai Bridge is a wooden pedestrian bridge over the Ōi River located in the city of Shimada, Shizuoka, Japan. It was constructed in 1879. With a length of 897.422 metres, the bridge was registered in The Guinness Book of Records as the longest wooden walking bridge in the world in 1997.

It’s long and high and you can easily fall off. We went across it on a particularly windy day and it made me nervous, but we made it safely across both ways. It’s a definite experience and I would recommend it. The shrine on the far side was nice to explore, too. 10/10, it was exciting and a nice outing. The tea shop on the side by the road is nice, too. The tea was really delicious and you can choose between...

Yes, it is a long foot bridge. I can't say we enjoy walking on it because the day we went here had a strong wind that It's hard to walked in it alone so we walked together and hold together back and forth. The children have fun though they felt s bit scary because of the wind but everything goes well. At first they're excited to walked on it. The parking is free and the entrance fee...

After the nth time of going here, finally able to crossed the bridge ❤️✨ This bridge is the 1997 Longest Wooden Walking Bridge in the world based on Guinness, and I am so happy to see and experience this in my life 🎌 Also there is a rumor that this bridge, is captured/used as a venue in an anime (not sure). Kudos, Japan on preserving this kind of structure. This is a must experience! ❤️💯

通常、「橋」というものは目的地があって、それに向かうための手段として存在すると思うのですが蓬莱橋の場合、対岸側は台地で茶畑が拡がっているだけなので、そのまま引き返してしまう人は多いと思います。 しかし、それでは余りにもったいない！（笑）。この橋の歴史と見どころについて、お話したいと思います。 「越すに越されぬ大井川」は防衛上の理由もあって、江戸時代は橋はおろか渡し船さえ無い状態が続いていましたが、明治に入って当時は荒れ地で何も無かった牧之原台地の開墾のため、ついに島田側から一本の橋が明治12年に架けられます。それが全長897.422mを誇る長大な木造橋、蓬莱橋です。 静岡県は明治になって先祖以来支給されてきた家禄を失った、徳川家直属の旗本や御家人など家族を含め約2万人の移住先として割当てられ、知藩事として徳川家当主の徳川家達が任命されていました。 当然ながら明治政府は元家臣達の生活の面倒までは見てくれなかったので、とにかく仕事をしなければなりません。そして家臣たちの一部は、水に乏しく農民からは相手にもされなかった牧之原台地の開墾を始め、茶の栽培に手をつけたのです。 どれほどの苦労と困難が伴ったかは想像もつきませんが、家達が元家臣達を激励するために、この台地を訪れた時に「この荒地が、いつかは蓬莱山のような宝の山になるように」という願いを込めて蓬莱橋と命名したのだとか。 ところで武士達は、何で他の作物ではなくて「茶」を選んだのでしょうか。静岡は温暖で栽培に適し、また西欧への輸出品として有望視されたから（中国の茶を求めてアヘン戦争が起こる程ですから。）ということになっています。 ただ地元の方から聞いた事なのですが、それは表向きの話で実はもっと重要な理由があったようなのです（笑）。 一応、武士の価値観としては流通や物の加工を請負う商工業より、直接生産に関わる農耕は尊い行為であり、畑を耕す事は恥でも何でもないはずです。 だったら普通に換金性の高い稲を植えればいいようなものですが、やっぱりドロンコになって耕すのは、武士として抵抗がありました。 その点、茶であれば以前は貴人しか飲めなかった高級品であり、さらに禅の思想や侘び寂び等の高尚な精神文化とも関わっており「なんか哲学的でカッコイイじゃないか」「イモを植えるよりは武士がやっても言い訳が出来る」という外面的理由も大きかったのだそうです。 妙な武士のプライドが生んだ静岡名産品と蓬莱橋と言うわけですね（笑）。ぜひ対岸の牧之原台地に登って武士達が苦労して開拓した、美しい茶畑の広がる静岡らしい風景も楽しんでいって下さい。
