Absolutely Beautiful shrine to see. I didn't know I took the easy way to the top until I was walking down the mountain. **The shrine has an entrance fee of 800¥ for an adult** There are 2 ways to get to the top. **Depends on what side of the mountain you are coming from!**** 1. You take the stairs up if you come from the sea side. (This is the main entrance) -do NOT underestimate these stairs, there are A LOT of stairs. Be prepared to be super tired, and bring water with you. 2. Coming from the zoo side you can take a bus ride to the top, then take the really cool ropeway to the shrine. - to use the ropeway it is 700¥ one way, so be prepared to pay that fee if you want to go to the shrine. If you have a goshuin book, they have the written seal area outside the shrine next to the ticket booth. People were nice and directed you where to go. All and all, this was a great visit and well worth the time it took me to get here. If you go, please be respectful of the sacred area, this is a religious and worship site. Conduct yourself accordingly!

Kunōzan Tōshōgū, nestled on the slopes of Mt. Kunō, is a truly captivating site that holds immense historical and cultural significance as the original resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa clan. Before his remains were moved to the famous Tōshōgū Shrine in Nikko, this was where Ieyasu was first enshrined, making it a must-visit for anyone fascinated by Japan’s feudal history. The shrine itself is a stunning example of early Edo-period architecture, beautifully ornate with intricate woodwork and vibrant colors. The detail in the carvings and lacquer work is remarkable, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of the era. The approach to the shrine, with its steep stone steps, adds to the sense of pilgrimage, and once you reach the top, the view of Suruga Bay is breathtaking, rewarding visitors for their climb.

I really enjoyed my visit to this shrine. It was very moving to be able to explore it and see the grave of Tokugawa. We took the rope way from Nihondaira and then walked down to the coast afterward. While i was there, there was a ceremony going on in the main temple for a newborn baby which was very interesting and educational for me to witness. We also went into the museum which was incredible. They have many personal items that belonged to Tokugawa and his descendants along with the armor worn by many individuals of his family line and swords that were used by them as well. It was very cool to see them and left a very strong impression. There are also some amazing views of the town and coast below the shrine. I highly recommend coming here if you have the opportunity.

quite like it here - it's quiet and calm, then was able to walk around with a peaceful mind and enjoy the environment. but i went there at a late time so some entrance to the temple was already blocked, i was only able to look at it from outside. but it's beautifully built. the stairs were quite large and high, so had to walk carefully especially for elderly. i spent around an hour here but i think when it's in operation hour like around noon? when all the temples are open and welcome for worshipping, it'd be good to spend more time here to refresh and relax both body and soul here.

Stopping in Shimizu during our Japan cruise, Kunōzan Tōshōgu Shrine was on the top list of must visit place. We were not disappointed. With the limited time we had, we took a train to Shizuoka station, and bus directly to the ropeway station on the bottom of Kunōzan ( a direct bus from the Shimizu station to the Kunōzan is also available, but rather infrequent) . However, on the second visit last year we decided to take taxi directly from a same cruise terminal, and saved lots of time.
