When people think of Hanami (Sakura bloom viewing) in Tokyo, they immediately think of the big famous parks. The thing I discovered and delighted in is that one does not need to go to a famous park to marvel at the ephemeral beauty of Sakura season in Tokyo.
Small parks in residential neighborhoods are every bit just as beautiful. Shirasagi Park is unassuming and out of the way of tourist crowds, but that is the beauty of this park.
It is where locals bring their kids to play on the way to or from the local supermarket. The bus stop and the koban (police box) is just a block away.
Old ladies gather to swap stories and news of friends; office people sit and rest on the benches while they eat a snack or a breakfast or lunch on the way to Ayase station.
The beauty of Shirasagi Park is that it is just a strip of land bordering the grounds of a pencil factory. It is right next to the street, and yet, it's spacious enough for kids to ride their bikes. The stream even has ducks! It is pretty in the spring with its Sakura and momiji. I should see it...
