Gochūan Cottage (Former residence of Taneda Santōka) — Attraction in Yamaguchi

The residence of Taneda Santōka. Perhaps the most amazing thing is it is completely unsupervised. There were no people in either the Gochūan ('in the thick of it' cottage) or accompanying rest house, despite there being clothing, an altar, wooden fish altar drum, materials related to the poets life and four tatami matted spaces, three in the hut, one in the rest house. I sat at the poet's altar, chanted the name of the Kannon Bodhisattva, and banged on the wooden fish drum, having turned on the lights, all for free. I think I would have been able to changed into the poet's kimono and taken a selfie disguised as Santōka (literall Mountain Head Fire) which is a brilliant name, and a make, these days, of sake, partly because the poet was as a famed dipsomaniac. But perhaps wearing his kimono is forbidden.

In the rest house, which is were the poet liked to chill, there are photos of the poet and his friends, details regarding his life, and two, at least, of his poems:

On the 47th anniversary of his mother's death Here you are Mum, An offering of udon, Of which I'll partake too.

On happy days and On sad days, The grass keeps growing.

The final verb is "shigeru" suggesting that there is grass cutting, rather than griping, to be done so I translated it as "keeps growing" instead of...

私が訪問した時間帯が、少し遅めだったせいか閉まっていました。ここの時間帯を確認しても、いつ開けていていつ閉めてるのか良く分かりません。また、機会があれば再訪したいです。今日は、取り敢えず、其中庵の外観と庭を拝観して帰りました。 其中庵と云えば、自由律俳句人の事。種田山頭火の住まいでした。現在の其中庵は、平成4年1992年3月に当時の建物を復元した建物です。 1938年昭和13年の11月の6年間まで、山口市湯田の風来居（ふうらいきょ）に移る迄、こちらの其中庵（ごちゅうあん）で、種田山頭火は過ごしました。 種田山頭火は、漂泊の人（ひょうはくのひと）でした。これといった生家も無く行脚していました。山頭火の日記には、日記の告白ではしきりに帰郷や定住を求めていたらしいです。何だかんだで、最後の住処を小郡の其中庵と、湯田の風来居にしました。 決定的瞬間の写真の、種田山頭火の後ろ姿の写真も有名ですよね。あの写真は、下関市の長府に住む?近木圭之助（ちかきけいのす...

山口の有名な俳人である種田山頭火が、昭和７年から昭和13年のあいだ過ごした庵を訪れました。其中庵までの道のりは少々複雑でした。其中庵の隣に住宅があるような、かなり住宅街にあり、驚きました。其中庵の外には、牛の石碑がありました。呉中庵の中にも入りました。初めは、玄関がどこなのかぱっと見気付きませんでした。中に入ってみるとカレンダーが9月になっており、ちゃんとここの施設を管理されているとわかります。草履などもあります。種田山頭火が修行の際に着用していた服や、俳句を書くための道具、山頭火が飲んでいたであろう酒があり、彼が過ごしていた時のままのようでした。 私が行った際は、誰にも会いませんでした。 すぐ近くには休憩所があり、トイレ...
