The North Theater — Attraction in Jarash

The North Theater shouldn't be missed if you're visiting Jordan and especially Jerash. The theater could seat thousands of people, and, even though it's partially collapsed now, we enjoyed sitting at the top and marveling at the size and imagining what it must have been like to watch performances in its day.

The theater is located a little way from the visitor center, so be prepared to do some walking to reach it. Comfortable shoes are recommended, but it’s worth the effort it for the panoramic views of the ancient city once you arrive. Also, since there’s not much shade, make sure to wear sunscreen and possibly bring a hat and liquid to stay hydrated.

We thought it was very cool to have one of our group on stage – speaking in a reasonable voice and see how well we could hear while seated in various parts of the theater. Its incredible acoustics means you can clearly hear voices, all without electronic amplification!

Северный театр соотносится с храмом Артемиды, который расположен по соседству. Древние строители возвели театр на северном склоне храмового холма, используя при этом природный рельеф. Благодаря этому театр имеет два входа, нижний - от декумануса, это улица направления восток-запад в римских городах, и верхний - от храма Артемиды. Так получилось, что я вошла через нижний вход и сразу увидела монументальный портик и парадные лестницы. Внутри было прохладно, просто спасение в невероятно жаркий день. По широкой лестнице поднялась наверх, откуда хорошо видна не только сцена, но и окрестности археологического парка. На вершине зрительного зала есть крепления, с помощью которых натягивали тент, он защищал зрителей от палящего солнца. Изначально на этом месте в 164-165 г.г. построили одеон, а через полвека его расширили и превратили в театр. С победой христианства античные постройки начали терять свое значение и приходить в упадок. Землетрясение 551 года довершило безрадостную картину разрушений. Хорошо, что власти Иордании занимаются реконструкцией древних построек. Театр я покидала через верхний вход, вышла - и сразу оказалась на вершине храмового склона, очень удобно. Театр мне очень понравился. По-моему, это самая лучшая постройка...
