And what about Riga without a romantic castle? It was built by knights in the 14th century, and there were probably stories with beautiful ladies. Did the townspeople kick out the knights for something? One lady, Tsarina Anna, was imprisoned when the castle was a prison. Later there were pioneers. And now the Latvian Presentation Office is located here. More often than not, I saw photos of the castle from the Daugava embankment. We walked along it from the city side. We decided to take the risk assuming that at least we'll be able to see the building itself from the inside. The whole building was "renovated" from the inside though. There were plain white walls all around. The only parts of the semi original castle were the cellars and stairs (but the stairs didn't allow access to any other floor so we had to walk back).
