The Penang State Mosque (GPS: 5.40677, 100.30061) or Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang, is the biggest mosque in Penang. It is located at the junction of Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Masjid Negeri. When I originally wrote this, I thought that it was designed by the great Brazillian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who passed away on 5 December 2012, just ten days from his 105th birthday. (Niemeyer was the architect who designed the Brazilian national cathedral in Brasilia, Brazil, among with many of the buildings in the Brazilian capital city. In recognition with its architecture, UNESCO inscribed Brasília as a World Heritage Site in 1987.) The Penang State Mosque was constructed in the 1970s, bearing Western Modernist as well as Malay elements in the design. I learned that, contrary to my initial thought, it was not the work of Niemeyer, but rather a Filipino architect by the name of Efren Brindez Paz. Occupying a 4.6-hectare site, the state mosque took four years to build, and can accommodate 5,000 worshippers at one sitting, making it the biggest mosque in the state. 11 Devember 2012 The Public Works Department (JKR) confirmed that the mosque was designed by Efren Brindez Paz. Mr Paz had designed a number of famous mosques in West Asia before I also learned that the contractor was Messrs. Loh Thow Yoong Sdn Bhd, and that the building was erected at a cost of M$5 million.1 The cost of construction came to around M$5 million of which M$2,104,601 came from the Federal Government, M$1.5 million from the State Government, and M$1,245,264 from public donations. 19 October 2012 I was told by someone researching on Oscar Niemeyer told me that Niemeyer actually did not design the Penang State Mosque or was he ever involved in it. The mosque must have been designed by the Filipino architect. 7 December 2012 I was informed by another person by email that the name of the Filipino architect who designed the Penang State Mosque is Efren Brindez Pez, who worked for the Public Works Department (JKR) in Penang in the early seventies. His contract was extended by the Prime Minister specifically so that he could finish the job of designing the mosque. How to go to the Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang The Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang is located at the junction of Jalan Air Itam and Green Lane. The nearest bus stop is along Jalan Air Itam. It is served by Rapid Penang bus 201, 202, 203, 204, 306 and 502. The main entrance to the compound is located on a driveway entered through Jalan Air Itam. Being a functional mosque, the prayer halls are not open to non-Muslim visitors.

Penang State Mosque – A Symbol of Faith and Modern Islamic Architecture The Penang State Mosque, also known as Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang, stands as one of the most important and impressive religious landmarks on the island. Located in George Town, this mosque is the central place of worship for Muslims in Penang and a symbol of unity, peace, and Islamic culture in the state. Built in the 1970s, the mosque was designed by renowned architect Bahari of Jabatan Kerja Raya and blends modernist architecture with traditional Islamic elements. Its striking geometric design, wide prayer halls, and towering minaret make it a visual standout. The mosque can accommodate over 5,000 worshippers at a time, especially during Friday prayers and Eid celebrations. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, and respectful attire is required. The mosque’s peaceful ambiance, combined with its clean and spacious interior, creates an ideal setting for reflection and learning about Islamic practices. Surrounded by greenery and open spaces, it offers a calm break from the bustle of the city. While it may not be as touristy as other attractions in Penang, it holds deep cultural and religious value. For those interested in Malaysia’s religious diversity and architectural heritage, the Penang State Mosque is definitely worth a visit.

It’s very beautiful mosque in Penang and it’s called national mosque of Penang (masjid negeri). Recently, they allow foreigners (muslin) to perform solat there although few gates are still closed due to Covid 19. It’s very near from Georgetown which is a main city or attraction of Penang. It takes around 20 min from Batu Ferenghi which is a island and beaches. I can beautiful places on the earth. If you stay in city or Batu Ferenghi, you can go to this central mosque within 20 min by grab or driving.

Penang State Mosque is a state mosque for the state of Penang, Malaysia. Built in 1979, it is located in the Northeast District. The State Mosque is administered by an Islamic Affairs Officer with the help of mosque officials and staff appointed by the government. The state of Penang is divided into six administrative districts. The construction of this mosque was inspired by Y.T.M. Tunku Abdul Rahman, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, early 1968. Active role Y.T.M. in elevating the syari'at of Islam such as proposing musabaqah reading the Quran in 1960, the construction of the National mosque in 1965 and conducting various Islamic missionary programs can not be denied by all layers of Muslims in Malaysia and even around the world. To fulfill the Muslim's passion for Penang, Y.T.M. Tunku has recommended a State Mosque to be set up in the state with a million ringgit guarantee as aid from the Federal Government. The proposal was welcomed by the state government under the leadership of Y.A.B. Penang Chief Minister, Dr. Lim Chong Eu. It was also fully supported by the late Tun Syed Sheh Shahbudin and late Tun Syed Sheh Al-Haj bin Syed Hassan Barakbah, former T.Y.T. Penang Chief Minister. The proposed proposal is also approved and endorsed by D.Y.M.M. His Majesty the Yang di Pertuan Agong as the Religious Head of Penang. The State Mosque Construction Committee was established in June 1969. The Dispatch Committee was chaired by Datuk Haji Harun Sirat who was then the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly with Datuk Haji Mohd. Sidek bin Elamdin, who was then a Confidential Secretary to T.Y.T....
