On a recent trip to Melaka, we decided to do something different than just browsing thru Jonkers Street or river cruising. We drove 45 minutes north of Melaka to visit a turtle conservation centre. We always thought you had to travel to Malaysia's East Coast to see these wonderful creatures but there is a government-run sanctuary just a short driving distance from Melaka town itself! We were very fortunate that our visit coincided with a study trip by a local university and so got to see first-hand how turtle eggs were hatched and the young hatchlings separated for their safety. We even got to hold one in our hands (see photo) which delighted us to no end! We were told that volunteers go out after midnight to collect the eggs along the same beach that the centre is located and they are then brought into the hatchery and tagged. Once the hatchlings are fit enough, they will be released back into the sea. The centre has the obligatory information room where you can see stuffed turtles and charts detailing the turtles that visit this part of the world, etc. etc. But nothing can beat the experience of actually seeing and holding the little cute hatchlings in the flesh! For a different perspective on the historic town of Melaka, go visit this...

The Padang Kemunting Turtle Conservation and Information Center is a modest yet meaningful destination for those interested in marine conservation. The facility is relatively small, featuring several tanks that house turtles of different species and sizes. An egg hatching area is also located opposite the main building, though access to this section is restricted to visitors.

The information center itself consists of a single air-conditioned room, displaying dioramas, exhibits, and educational panels that provide insights into turtle species found in Malaysia. While compact, the space offers informative content and serves as a good introduction to the conservation efforts in the area.

Admission and parking are complimentary, adding to the convenience of the visit. Beyond the center, visitors can access the adjacent beach, which is generally clean, quiet, and not heavily frequented. However, the seawater tends to appear murky.

Do note that the access road leading to the site is narrow, only accommodating two-way traffic with care, and parking outside the designated area can be limited.

Overall, this center provides a brief yet educational experience and is a worthwhile stop for those who appreciate wildlife conservation and a tranquil seaside...

I recently visited the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Melaka and I was truly impressed with my experience. The park is dedicated to the conservation and protection of sea turtles and provides an educational experience for visitors of all ages.

The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, and provided a wealth of information about the various species of sea turtles and their habitats. The park also has a variety of interactive exhibits and activities, such as touch tanks and guided tours, which made the experience both educational and enjoyable.

One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to observe sea turtle hatchlings being released into the ocean, which was a truly unforgettable experience. It was great to see the conservation efforts in action and learn about the important role the park plays in protecting these magnificent creatures.

Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre for anyone interested in sea turtles and conservation. The park's knowledgeable staff, interactive exhibits, and unique experiences make it a must-visit destination for anyone...

The access road to the destination is horrible, the traffic is damn messy, narrow road with 2 ways traffic. The local authority shall improve the road safety with ample road signs. When you enter the entrance, turn right and follow the path showing on the floor to watch the turtles. 2 pools there but only 1 pool with turtles. The little turtles feeding container is located opposite the information centre. Inside the information centre, register your name at the front desk before you get the turtles information from the posters pasted on wall and mural in the display cabinet. There is a turtles egg fertile area opposite the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre but cannot view anything and no staffs there for explanation or information. Too bad.
