Fort Alice — Attraction in Sarawak

A small reconstructed fort with a commanding view overlooking the Batang Lupar river and Simanggang town.

Entry is free. There are some canons and traditional boats on the ground floor. Exhibits on the first floor display some historical artefacts. There is a moot court in the centre.

Take off your shoes before ascending the staircase to protect the wooden floor.

It is not airconditioned and there are hardly any fans, hence it is quite warm.

Fort Alice served various purposes throughout its history. Its primary function when initially built was as a defensive structure. Later, Fort Alice served as an administrative building, housing a courthouse, treasury, hospital, and shipping office.

The exhibition at Fort Alice consists of five themes that cover the history of the fort building and events that have influenced the history of Sri Aman

Sunday afternoon, no one was around, just the two of us. No caretaker, nothing. Rather strange. Spent about 30 minutes checking out the exhibits to get a feel of the tiny kingdoms that existed up to 400 years ago. Probably a spruced-up exhibit could be displayed at the Borneo Cultures museum with video presentations etc for a short period to showcase these long-forgotten riverine kingdoms.
