Pamplemousses Garden — Attraction in Isle Mauritius

The park is beautiful. BUT they don’t seem to care about the old turtles, which are an endangered species. We were in the Casela Park one day before visiting Pamplemousses and the difference is enormous! The enclosure for turtles in Casela is huge. The enclosure in pamplemousses is tiny: all the turtles are trying to catch some shadow in the hot summer sun and cannot find a spot with descent shadow. The grass is so short, that they don’t have anything to eat and the water is very dirty. No turtle was moving. In the Casela park, the turtles were walking around and were interacting with the humans and at Casela, you can pet them, feed them and touch them very gently. Feeding the turtles at pamplemousses is strictly forbidden… I definitely recommend Casela and hope, the people at pamemousses start to care about their precious turtles. "I giardini, noti anche con il nome ufficiale di "Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden", sono una delle visite più belle che si possono fare a Mauritius, ovviamente se avete interesse per le piante. Si tratta infatti di un orto botanico classificato fra i migliori 5 nel mondo e anzi molti lo considerano "scavalcato" in classifica solo dai Kew Gardens di Londra. La regione deve il nome Pamplemousses all’albero di agrumi simile al pompelmo che gli olandesi introdussero a Mauritius da Java. Per visitare il giardino si può ingaggiare una delle guide esperte che troverete subito dopo l’ingresso, oppure fare una visita indipendente utilizzando la cartine da prendere in biglietteria. C'è un ampio parcheggio all'ingresso. La cosa più appariscente del giardino è lo stagno pieno di ninfee giganti Victoria amazonica, originarie del Sudamerica, con foglie che possono raggiungere i due metri di diametro e con splendidi fiori; il mese migliore per vedere queste piante è gennaio, ma vi assicuro che erano notevoli anche ad aprile, quando le ho viste io. Le palme sono l’attrattiva principale dei giardini, in una straordinaria varietà di forme e fogge. Particolarmente notevoli sono le tozze palme bottiglia, le alte palme reali e le palme talipot, che fioriscono una volta soltanto dopo quarant’anni di vita e poi muoiono. Comunque sulla mappa troverete indicate le ""attrazioni"" principali. I giardini, che devono il nome a Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, prima personalità a ricoprire la carica di primo ministro di Mauritius, vennero ideati da Mahé de Labourdonnais nel 1735 come orto per il suo Mon Plaisir Château (oggi sede di una piccola mostra di fotografie). Vicino al ""castello"" si trova la piattaforma funebre dove fu cremato Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (le sue ceneri vennero poi disperse nel Gange, in India), e varie personalità di tutto il mondo in visita hanno piantato alberi nei giardini circostanti ‒ tra gli altri Nelson Mandela, Indira Gandhi e numerosi reali britannici. Il paesaggio iniziò ad avere l’aspetto attuale nel 1768 grazie all’orticoltore francese Pierre Poivre e, come i Kew Gardens, anche questi giardini furono oggetto di spionaggio per gli esperti del settore. Poivre importò semi da tutto il mondo, nel tentativo di porre fine alla dipendenza della Francia dal mercato delle spezie asiatiche. As other reviewers have mentioned, paying the c75 Rupees for the professional guides was money extremely well spent. MAnni was our guide and was happy to explain the history of plants and show us some of the more extraordinary plants and how they have been used for dyes, medicine as well as all the spices and other exotic plants. I didn't see any cafe etc inside but there are street sellers outside and a cafe opposite if you are thirsty afterwards.

We also travelled there frome Grand Baie on the 215 express bus. This cost 144 Rupees each way for 3 people which is significantly cheaper than a cab. THey run every 30 mins from just opposite the Dominoes Pizza place on the fron in Grand Baie and travel to Port Louis.
