Trou aux Cerfs is located in the heart of Curepipe, there you will find a dormant volcano surrounded by nature; a vast area of lush forest consisting of indigenous plant species, some giant green pine trees, lush greenery, trees, flowers and a small lake at the center, I have never seen such beauty before. If it wasn’t a dormant volcano, I would have found my way down to lie on the untamed grasses and day dream about my prince charming but reality can be a pain in the butt sometimes.
This is one of the famous natural tourist attractions in Mauritius, the dormant volcanic crater is around 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of around 100 meters. Interestingly, Trou aux Cerfs is also known as ‘Murr’s Volcano’. It is believed that the Trou aux Cerfs volcano erupted once and has remained dormant for the last 700,000 years; experts believe that there is a potential chance for it to become active again.
Here, you can get some souvenirs from the locals at a very cheap and affordable rate and you get a spectacular view of some part of Mauritius from the view point of the crater, you also get to see the majestic view of the Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis- Moka mountain range. There is also their meteorological centre (radar station) close to this tour site so you can enjoy the view of the blue building and the blue clear sky.
Team fitfam, this a favourite spot for joggers and walkers – you get lovely views of the plateau. There are benches where you can rest and reflect, and a radar station that keeps an electronic eye on cyclone activity.

Trou aux Cerfs is a fascinating stop for anyone visiting Mauritius. Located in Curepipe, it's a dormant volcanic crater that offers a different kind of natural beauty from the island's famous beaches. The main draw here is the incredible panoramic view. From the rim of the crater, you can see a sweeping 360-degree vista of the surrounding area, including the town of Curepipe and the distant mountain ranges. On a clear day, the view is absolutely stunning and provides a great perspective on the island's geography. The crater itself is quite impressive. It's lush with green vegetation, and there's a small, peaceful lake at the bottom. It's a great spot for a short walk around the rim, which feels surprisingly serene despite the proximity to the town. While it's not a full-day excursion, it's definitely worth the visit, especially if you're already in the area. It's a good place to appreciate the island's volcanic origins and take some great photos. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is that the experience is relatively quick. However, as a unique natural landmark, it's a must-see. The fresh air and the wide-open views are a welcome break from the more typical...
Read moreThe place offers stunning views — but make sure to go on a clear, sunny day. We went while it was raining and very windy, and unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy the views or take any good photos due to the weather. It’s a beautiful spot, but weather conditions can really affect the experience.
The visit is quite short — it usually takes less than 30 minutes to walk around and cover the whole area, so it’s best to plan it along with other nearby attractions.
Also, just a heads-up: we were approached by someone who started giving us a detailed explanation about the place, including its history and the types of trees in the area — which was actually quite informative. However, he didn’t mention upfront that it was a paid service, and only asked for money at the end. It’s unclear if he was an official guide, so it’s best to be cautious and ask in advance if any payment is expected.
Another small note: if you need to use the toilet, be aware that there’s a fee. So it’s good to keep some cash on hand just in case.
Overall, it’s a nice quick stop if it happens to be on your way — but I wouldn’t recommend making it your main...
