National Museum of Death — Attraction in Aguascalientes

I really enjoyed my visit to this museum. So many representations of death. Some rooms can be a bit macabre especially the first room with live photos and images of notable deaths of Mexican people e.g. Frida Kahlo on her death bed is shown here but others really allow you to learn a lot about the Mexican culture's relationship to death and death rituals. The museum even features some exhibits of death rituals from other places in the world (this part was a very small exhibit). The biggest caveat is that everything is in Spanish so you can go through it really quickly and miss the significance of what you're seeing. The first experience is to walk (carefully) down a dim staircase to a sort of catacomb, which sets a tone for the entire museum, and where one gets a sense of the archeological finds in Mexico. The above-ground galleries feature various art media and cultural artifacts related to death, the devil, angels, and the afterlife. The art evokes multiple adjectives: striking, provocative, humorous, troubling. El Museo Nacional de la Muerte (Mumu) es unos de los principales atractivos turísticos de la ciudad de Aguascalientes; el Mumu se ubica en la zona centro en el edificio 19 de Junio en Rivero y Gutiérrez esquina José María Morelos y Pavón. El acceso tiene un costo de $40 pesos y si presentas credencial de estudiante e inapam pagas sólo el 50% de costo. A la entrada encontrarás unos casilleros para guardar tus pertenencias; una vez guardadas tus pertenencias, te indican donde iniciar el recorrido. Como lo dice su nombre, el Mumu aborda la temática de la muerte desde los cultos prehispánicos, sus dioses y rituales hasta las festividades del día de muertos, la catrina, etc., por lo que cuenta con varias salas que te hablan desde el inframundo hasta la época contemporánea. En el museo encuentras también actividades interactivas como un altar de día de muertos donde puedes agregar o quitar elementos. También encontrarás un cuerpo momificado, hay una calavera gigante en una explanadita, varias catrinas, cuadros con calaveras, etc. El recorrido se hace en 40-60 minutos; al finalizar puedes comprar un souvenir en la tienda en la cual venden hermosas artesanías alusivas a la temática del museo o tomarte algo en su cafetería.
