One of the most representative site from Guadalajara for people outside the city. This beautiful city has this incredible monument fountain called Minerva, which represents the Roman Goddess (Athena in Hellenic Culture). This sculpture ws created by Joaquín Arias who created this piece of art with the idea of locating it at the second biggest fountain of the city. Nowadays, people call it "Minerva Fountain" or "Minerva Monument." The sculpture was presented in 1956. This fountain has a 74 meters diameter and in its center there is the Minerva sculpture which is 8 feet tall. "Minerva" is holding a long spear in her right hand and on the left one she has a Roman-round shield. She is wearing a Roman-style helmet and wearing a loose-two-piece tunic without sleeves and tighted by the waist. The right leg is slightly back while the whole body is a little bit turned to that side to create a "motion" effect. You could see two sayings on the side of the monument: "1. Justicia, sabiduría y fortaleza custodian esta leal ciudad" ( Which means: "Justice, wisdom, and strength safeguards this loyal city." ) and "2. A la gloria de Guadalajara." ( Which means "To the Glory of Guadaljara." )
On the central spot we could read the names of people which contributed to create Guadaljara city (in Jaalisco State): Francisco Javier Gamboa, Valentín Gómez Farías, José Justo Corro, Mariano Otero, Ignacio L. Vallarta, Pedro Ogazón, Matías de la Mota Padilla, Luis Pérez Verdía y José Justo Corro).
On the other side we can find the next names: Fernando Calderón, José María Vigil, José López Portillo y Rojas, Enrique González martínez, Manuel López Cotilla, Salvador García Diego, Paglo Gutiérrez, Jacobo Gálvez and Manuel Gómez Ibarra.
The architect in charge of the whole proyect of " La Minerva."
Surrounding the fountain there is a grass circle with 86 meters in diameter. It is normally decorated with flowers and plants from the region but now it has real "agave" which is a typical plant from the region from which Tequila is obtained.
If you visit Guadalajara, this is a must for you to stop by. It is at a roundabout, so you will need to park across from it not next to it.

Read moreI visited La Minerva in Guadalajara this past Sunday morning. I’ve been here many times before, but this Sunday was special. The city was celebrating 20 years of the open bike path, a public initiative for the citizens of Guadalajara. The event was simply fantastic. There was an exhibition of vintage cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. You could see families and children enjoying the day. It's a very safe area, where you can get a glimpse of the lifestyle of Guadalajara’s residents – the Guadalajara lifestyle. This place is just amazing on weekends,...

This is my favorite monument and image of Guadalajara. Can be super dangerous in the traffic circle. I generally ride my bike around the outer road during the week in high traffic hours. I have seen several wrecks in the area, but we all know how we drive in Guadalajara. I think it is more about the driving than the actual design of the...
