I had an absolutely fantastic experience thanks to you. Coming from Romania, I organized everything in advance and I want to tell you that everything went according to plan. We had equally good communication on Whatsapp where we also set the place (hotel) and the time we would be picked up in the morning. The bus was comfortable and the driver's behavior was impeccable. The guide who was waiting for us at El Tajin made the experience we had there an extraordinary one, presenting the history of the place in so many details and with a passion that I have rarely been given to experience. I want to mention that we were a group of 8 people, of which I and a friend were not Spanish speakers, so the guide chose to divide us into two groups presenting in Spanish and later in English. At the entrance to the archaeological site we thoroughly enjoyed the show offered by Los Voladores de Papantla. On the way back to Veracruz we had 2 and a half hours to enjoy the authentic experience of a small Mexican town, Papantla. We were lucky to meet 2 wonderful people from Mexico who took us on a tour of the city. Initially we were thinking to go to eat in a restaurant, but they came up with the idea of going to a market where I was going to have one of the best culinary experiences of my entire life. The variety of Tamales eaten there and the juice made from red corn were simply fantastic. The Mexican fellow travelers insisted on paying for all of us, considering us to be their guests, this showed once more how hospitable the Mexican people are. We tried the fried crickets with salsa and lime, a local pastry, chili peppers and more. We ended our day in Papantla watching once again the show of the Papantla Flyers held in the churchyard of the city and later climbing to the highest point of the city where a huge statue of a flyer was placed. From there we went to the meeting point where the driver was waiting for us and set off at full speed towards Veracruz. We made one last stop on the side of the road where a family served us the best grilled corn seasoned with butter, mayo, a local cheese and of course some hot spices. Just like when leaving, the bus left us in front of the hotel on the way back. I can only thank you for the fantastic experience...
Read moreDuring my stay in Veracruz I took the Quiahuiztlán, Cempoala and La Antigua tour. I'm surprised this tour isn't more popular. It's a full day, but takes you to important sites in the history of Mexico and North America. Around 1200-years old, Quiahuiztlán is a wonderful, serene religious site with beautiful views towards the Gulf. Just down the hill, Villa Rica isn't officially on the tour but because I was the only one on the excursion, my driver asked if I'd like to visit. Of course! Villa Rica was the first official Spanish settlement, where Cortez would scuttle his ships preventing any malcontent soldiers from returning to Cuba. The history of Mexico takes a turn. From here, we travelled on to the archeological site at Cempoala. Indigenous here were among the first group to ally with the Spanish. They'd grown frustrated with Aztec/Mexica domination and Moctezuma's demand for tributes. Tlacochealcatl, the Fat King who ruled this site agreed to assist Cortez if the Spanish could help reduce the amount of tributes his people would have to pay the Aztecs every 80-days. This is the wedge Cortes would use to build an allyship among other Indigenous groups. Last on the tour, La Antigua is where Cortez lived briefly before the house becomes a Customs House. All precious metal, jewellery, art, every animal, food and spice would travel through here. Including human cargo.
I travelled to Veracruz specifically to visit these places. While the tour was in Spanish only (I could speak and understand some), I also came with some knowledge of the history. Being present in these locations meant something to me and I appreciate the efforts of my driver and the guides in each location to help fill in the blanks. My driver was helpful and pointed out places I may have overlooked. He was my Chief/my Captain for the day. The guides at each location were exceptional. They harboured their histories of the past and shared them generously with...
