Perched majestically on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, the castle in Ulcinj, Montenegro, stands as a timeless sentinel of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its ancient walls echoing tales of centuries past, this formidable fortress offers a glimpse into a bygone era of maritime conquests, trade, and cultural exchange.

The rich history of the Ulcinj castle is a tapestry woven with the threads of various civilizations that have left their mark on its walls. From the Illyrians and Romans to the Byzantines and Ottomans, each era has contributed to the unique blend of architectural styles and cultural influences that define the castle’s character.

But perhaps the most enchanting aspect of the castle is its unrivaled vantage point overlooking the Adriatic Sea, where the sunsets are nothing short of breathtaking. As the golden orb dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the tranquil waters, visitors are treated to a spectacle of unparalleled beauty that has earned the Adriatic the title of having some of the best sunsets in the world.

In addition to its rich history and natural splendor, the castle serves as a hub of cultural activity, hosting events, exhibitions, and performances that celebrate the region’s heritage. From traditional music and dance to art festivals and historical reenactments, there is always something captivating happening within the castle walls.

For anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Montenegro’s past and present, a visit to the castle in Ulcinj is a must. With its storied history, stunning vistas, and vibrant cultural scene, it is a testament to the enduring spirit of this...

It’s basically a stone fortress on the edge of the Adriatic — with narrow cobblestone streets, old walls, and insane sea views around every corner.

The best part? It’s not just ruins — people actually live here. You’ll see laundry hanging from balconies, little kids playing, and locals chatting on the steps. That gives it a real, lived-in vibe instead of feeling like a museum.

You can walk up from the Small Beach (Mala Plaža) in about 10 minutes, but it’s all uphill and the stones are uneven — wear sneakers, not flip-flops. Parking around the entrance is tricky, especially in summer, so be ready to park lower and climb.

Climb up to the walls — you’ll get some of the best views in Ulcinj, especially at sunset.

There are a bunch of restaurants and cafés tucked inside the walls. They’re pricier than the rest of town, but you’re paying for that view over the water, and it’s worth it at least for a drink.

Small souvenir shops, art galleries, and even a couple of boutique hotels are hidden in the alleys.

It’s not a stroller-friendly place — the steps are steep and the streets are narrow. But that’s part of the charm.

Bottom line: Ulcinj Old Town is a mix of history, daily life, and postcard views. Perfect for wandering, grabbing a drink with a sunset view, and taking a ton of photos — just bring comfy shoes and expect some...

I went by train from Podgorica to Bar and from there by bus to Ulcinj. Unfortunately the old town is quite far away from the main bus station and there are no information about any public transport to the harbour. I didn't see there any bus stop as well. That was a bit disappointing as I had to walk the whole way. But anyways, once you made your way there you will get a beautiful old town just for yourself because most of the people don't make their way down to Ulcinj. So you can enjoy quiet alleys with strolling cats and the cool find that's blowing through the streets. From the fortress you get a magnificent view of Ulcinj. I can recommend this...
