Molen Van Sloten (1990) & Kuiperij Museum - Windmill — Attraction in Amsterdam

Lovely little windmill museum in the town of Sloten, by the airport. The staff / volunteers were super friendly and gave a very informative and interesting tour. You really get to see the inner workings of the entire windmill, from the ground floor to the very top. This is still a functioning windmill and we happened to go on a very windy day, so we also saw the cogs turning and the windmill spinning. The only thing we didn’t see was the water itself being pumped, because water levels were low enough that it didn’t need to be pumped out.

It was not busy at all when we visited on a Monday afternoon. After our guided tour, which lasted about an hour, we had time to explore at our leisure. Would highly recommend this museum, especially for kids who are interested in mechanics and how...

Great working windmill! The tour guides are fantastic and love to answer questions. The tour was 8.5 Euro and included more than just the mill. Local people through the years have brought historical and interesting local artifacts to the mill so they also have a small collection of such things. They have several large models of Dutch ships right the ages both River and ocean faring. I really liked the fact that you could see the mill all the way from the Archimedes screw to the very top break arm. They have several models of various windmills both inside and out well as City diaramas to explain how the polders work. And since Rembrandt was a miller's son (and maybe some other connection to Sloten...) The have a 10 minute audio visual presentation...

We wanted to see a real windmill up close so I found the Molen Van Sloten Windmill tour online and booked us a couple tickets for their tour.

The windmill is located in a regular neighborhood with a small park and monument outside. Very good opportunity for photos with a windmill. Our tour was was another family...small group made it very easy to hear and ask questions. The guide showed us the inside of the windmill and it's workings as well as the exhibits showing dutch life at the time. We left with a good understanding of windmills and early Dutch life.
