Tall John Abbey Tower — Attraction in Middelburg

Large, historic abbey complex in the heart of Middelburg. Climb Lange Jan tower for panoramic views of the city.

One of Middelburg’s best-known sites, the Abbey of Middelburg dates all the way back to 1127. Most of the original buildings were destroyed by fires in the 15th and 16th centuries. Once a monastery, the abbey now has multiple functions housing offices, university buildings and the Zeeuws museum. Made up of many beautiful and historic buildings, the abbey’s courtyard is a great place to enjoy the architecture and calm atmosphere. It's also a great place to snap some pics.

An even better photo spot may be the stop of Lange Jan tower. Known in English as “Tall John”, this octagonal 91 meter abbey tower is the tallest structure in the city. Climb its 207 steps for a small fee to get great views of Middelsburg and over the Wacheleren Peninsula.

You’ll find 2 churches at the abbey, Koorkerk, dating back to the 14th century whilst Nieuwe Kerek was built in the 16th century. You aren’t short of historic buildings here! They are worth a quick look inside but aren’t the most impressive parts of the abbey.

For only €6.50, you get the best panoramic views of this beautiful city. It’s absolutely glorious and the steps really aren’t too bad. You’re given a little brochure (in Dutch) when you get your ticket and it explains the history of the Abbey. A lot of the windows were fogged up but there were still some good panes to take...

De abdijtoren is een 90,5 meter hoge kerktoren die behoort tot het abdijcomplex in Middelburg . Hij is merkwaardig gesitueerd tegen de zuidwand van de eenbeukige koorkerk.

De toren heeft als bijnaam de Lange Jan en is nummer tien op de lijst van hoogste kerktorens in Nederland . De toren beklimmen is mogelijk maar U moet er wel 207 treden voor over hebben . Op heldere dagen kun je zelfs de omringende eilanden zien.

Middelburgers danken hun bijnaam aan de Lange Jan . Eens , in een ver verleden moet een inwoner van de Zeeuwse hoofdstad ( die vermoedelijk te diep in het glaasje had gekeken ) , het schijnsel van de maan op de toren voor vlammen hebben aangezien.... de gealarmeerde brandweer kon gelukkig weer onverrichter zake naar huis vertrekken . Sindsdien heten de Middelburgers '' De Manenblussers '' .

Wat wel waar is dat de Lange Jan meerdere malen echt in brand gestaan heeft , maar na iedere schade werd hij naar originele stijl...
