Royal Palace 'Huis ten Bosch' in The Hague is the official private residence of the King of the Netherlands and his family. It was built in 1645 and expanded considerably in 1734. Although the outside of the palace appears quite modest compared to royal palaces in other European monarchies, the interior has lavishly decorated rooms, salons, and halls. A number of the great masters of Dutch arts contributed to it. The Palace is situated in a secluded, private part of the Hague Forest or 'Haagse Bos' in the Dutch language. Being the private family residence of the royal family, the palace is not open to visitors, except at invitation by the king. One can view the exterior from a distance on the northwest side of the Palace, where it has its main entrance. The park next to the royal palace grounds is open to the public, free of charge.
