Read moreI had a lovely afternoon’s walk to here and I enjoyed the gardens on the whole - and the cafe food and location is lovely too. However, I have to say, on my walk from the city centre I only saw one butterfly (and some flies on a dead pigeon) and in the gardens there were many areas where I didn’t see many insects. The ‘bee area’ with its hives and plentiful, bee-accessible flowering plants on the other hand was lovely, as were the areas you are trying to encourage typical plants of the area. My question to the staff was - do you use pesticides, like so much of the Netherlands? And they said yes. And, now, my question is ‘why?’. I enjoyed my visit, but it saddened me too, to think that even in such a place of learning, there didn’t appear to be any real attempt to change what has happened to the ecology of the land in very recent times. Perhaps though, to be fair, because I can’t read Dutch, I missed the important work being done on this. I hope so as it would be a shame to think that the Botanical Gardens are simply a museum to what once was our environment, with a balanced...
Read moreWe visited the Botanical Gardens on a Sunday and had such a lovely time. There weren’t many people, so it felt calm and peaceful as we walked around exploring the different areas. Even though it’s autumn and there aren’t many flowers in bloom, the autumn colors of the trees and plants were absolutely beautiful. The indoor gardens are really nice and full of interesting tropical and desert plants and the butterfly garden was a real highlight, with butterflies flying freely all around us. After exploring, we had lunch at the café and enjoyed a delicious apple pie while sitting outside overlooking the gardens, a perfect way to end our visit! The gardens are part of Utrecht University, located on the historic Fort Hoofddijk, which adds a unique atmosphere to the place. It’s very well maintained, educational, and relaxing perfect for a weekend outing, nature lovers, or anyone looking for a quiet...
