Otarawairere Bay — Attraction in Bay of Plenty

One of my favorite places around Whakatane, this place is a hidden gem. You can only get here by foot: either down the hill from Otarawairere road or around the first part of the Kohi point track. I think the latter is easier, especially for kids, and way more scenic. The bay itself has beaches made of fine pieces of shell rather than sand. The beach going into the water is a bit steep but you can swim here. There are rockpools at various places round the bay for fossicking through. No facilities so take only photos & leave...

Awesome beach and part of a longer walk. Steep walk down to the beach (worse coming up) but well worth it. Great spot for swimming and snorkeling. Views out to White Island from the walks...
