Visited Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts (GAPA) situated in the Waikato University compound for their final Matariki 2023 lecture which focused on Maori healthcare, research, reducing inequities for Maori and Pacific Island peoples within the healthcare space.
Design; I really enjoyed being in this space, it had large bifold doors which opened out and revealed a large pond and small walk bridge. It provided a quiet and serene backdrop to sit, relax, chat, eat, enjoy a cup of coffee during the break time. Within the lecture room there was plenty of comfortable seating, large tables, complete with the old school tools (pen and a ream of paper).
Catering; I enjoyed the vegan friendly food, it was tasty, morning and afternoon tea was delish - standout was the chocolate slice, lowlight was the lack of salad dressing on the the salad - it was crisp-but as I said, lacked seasoning and salad dressing. Additionally, the catering crew lacked cultural understanding - they were making a loud noise and were talking during the karanga (which I am told is sacred and there should not be any loud noises, banging and carrying on while this sacred ceremonial call is being conducted). 1 out of 5 for lack of cultural competency for the catering team- recommend you get training to improve your knowledge of acceptable cultural protocols to adhere to.
Facilities; Clean facilities with disability functionality, lovely artwork on the walls - which I was told was a representation to the late Dame Te Atairangikaahu.
Overall, this is a very special place to come, to enjoy, to listen to bright researchers, teachers, professors and students discuss ways to reduce the inequities surrounding Maori and Pacifica peoples in the health space.

Read moreGreat location and beautiful outlook onto the lake while inside. I had my teacher registration ceremony here and it was the perfect place to celebrate it. Lots of parking available too. The theatre inside where we received our awards might have been a little cramped but it was good too. With great company, I want to thank you for such an amazing night! I would highly recommend this place for future...
