When my husband and I disembarked from our cruise in Port Chalmers, we spotted Flagstaff Lookout from the port and decided to make the climb before our bus tour began. The streets leading up are a bit steep, but trust me—the views at the top make it all worthwhile!
From the lookout, we were treated to stunning panoramic views of the port, watching ships come and go, but the real highlight was seeing our own cruise ship from an entirely new perspective. It’s a fantastic vantage point to take in the beauty of the harbour.
At the peak, you’ll also find the historic staff that gives the lookout its name—a neat little nod to the past. If you’ve got a bit of time and don’t mind a bit of a hill climb, this is a great spot to stretch your legs and soak in the scenery....
Read moreIt’s a great lookout point looking over the port on one side and Portobello in the other. It’s a short walk if you park on George Street before the Mount street crossing. You can also park on Grey street or Scotia street. The last stretch of Aurora street has no parking till the flagstaff itself where 4-5 cars can be parked.
