The historic Oxenbridge Tunnel Track is a half hour return walk offering multiple viewpoints overlooking the famous Shotover River. Families will love this short day walk in Arthurs Point, Queenstown.

The folly of gold fever is apparent! A bit like cryptocurrency if you ask me. It only retains it's value or becomes valuable if in limited supply. When gold was discovered in the New World (the Americas) by Spain and brought back to Europe they had horrendous inflation.

"Gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head."- Warren Buffett

Scientists now believe that neutron star collisions (black hole) are the primary source of gold and other heavy elements in the universe.

In 1862 a large gold rush on the Shotover River, at the time dubbed ‘the richest river in the world’, turned a quiet piece of paradise into a seething mass of prospectors. Miners undertook various methods to part the gold from the land and water – including the panning of river gravels, alluvial mining along riverbanks, and dredging – as time passed, the returns from remaining gold deposits lessened to the extent that miners had to become inventive with methods to provide better access to deposits just out of reach, beneath the roiling waters of the Shotover rapids. A series of rapids above Arthurs Point had been dubbed by early miners as ‘the Jeweller’s Shop’, fabled for the bounty of gold that could be extracted but for the...

Turning left just before crossing the historic bridge to get to Shotover river from Queenstown you find yourself on a gravel road leading to the Historic Tunnel Walk. The gravel road become difficult to cross with out a 4x4 however the short walking distance adds to the scenic walk.

The tunnel opening can not be viewed from the top of the cliff where the trail leads you, rather it can only be viewed by kayak on the other had where the water exits the tunnel can be excess by going off the trail it self. The detour is not recommended to be undertaken on a rainy day as the edge is steep and slippery.

The is well worth it for those who like exploring but don’t not want to wonder to far...

Short walk to a waterfall, recommend following Google directions to find this as its quite easy to drive past, at first you will think your heading the wrong way but just keep following it, as it is taking you to the right place, and also recommend that you stop driving once you pass the green buildings, their will be a little part were you can park your car, going past this point my led you to getting your car stuck as the sand can become uneven, then walk for 2 minutes and you'll find a little post that will led you on the right path to...

Relatively easy and very pleasant walk. Took us less than 15 minutes from car parking (sandy bumpy area) to the end of the trail at the lookout. Can walk along river rocks a bit if desired or sticky stay on trail. Small rapids and small waterfall. One piece of intact mining equipment below you. It’s not spectacular but worth 30 minutes or less if you time. A bit uphill but not strenuous.
