Lake Tekapō Holiday Park Playground — Attraction in South Island

Only campervan park in the area so quite expensive ($60 for powered site). Facilities were amazing! Free showers, kitchen, rubbish bins and a dump station down the road. WiFi wasn’t great in the evenings but was ok.

1 star removed because of an unpleasant encounter with one of the groundsmen on my last day- we woke up and drove from our site to the lake shore to have breakfast. I walked back up to the kitchens with my frying pan and food. At the top I was stopped by a groundsman clearing weeds. He asked me if I was a paying customer, I said yes, he then said what pitch number I was- I couldn’t remember but said I was ‘the first pitch as you enter so perhaps number 1?’ (in reality it was no.13 or 14). He then said I was lying to him as he knew the people at no.1. I then pointed to my spot (behind no.1) and explained we’d moved to the lake side to have breakfast. He appeared to accept my explanation saying ‘we have trouble with people sneaking in to use the facilities’ and I carried on into the kitchen. I think as I was cooking he checked my vehicle for the ticket in the window, as when I went back outside he said ‘Dont worry I trust you now’. Don’t camp here if you’re staying in a tent. It’s full of campervans and you’ll be kept awake by the sound of sliding doors all night. It would be an improvement if the kept the campervans and actual campers in seperate spaces.

The site itself is quite ugly and tacky, with flat spots carved brutally out of the hill and a tacky pool park playing bad music diminishes the natural beauty of the lake. The staff were very nice.

The nearby town is a bit sterile and soulless. Feels like it sprung up overnight without much thought about a sympathetic, thoughtful and gradual development. Paved paradise.

Absolutely gorgeous, views are magnificent!! Really gutted we didn't stay here for 2 nights, we will be definitely coming again. Everything here very clean & tidy whanau, bring your kids, nieces & nephews, bring all the whanau. They have a nice & safe playground for the kids & tv room, also a great pleasure to see all the children drawing pictures for the walls, that's such a brilliant idea, oh can't forget the bbq areas with the sunbathing seats out front.
