This is an amazing beautiful beach with a very good sized and well resourced camping ground. It is within easy walking and distance from the Opunake main street,bit of a climb out of the bay, beach area. Generally a safe swimming beach with a great surf life saving club on duty through the summer. There can be a rip at times that has to be treated with great respect for good swimmers, let alone non swimmers or beginners, but with the surf life saving experts on patrol and flags out advising where it's safe to swim there should not be any issues, obey the experts. The town very well caters for all anyone needs for food, great cafes, restaurants, heaps of art and crafts shops and outlets all around the town, incredible views of the Maunga Taranaki. If the sea with wind directly coming in from the west can create great waves both for swimming and surfing. Read moreSituated 5mins from Opunake township, the beach is well worth a visit. You can take the road right down to the beach carpark, where the lifesaving club house, children's play area, public toilets and camping area are located.
It's a beautiful spot to have a picnic lunch like we did.
Or, you take the road a little further out of town to another carpark that up above the cliffs and overlooks the beach.
A rugged black sand West Coast beach, it's surrounded on both sides by high cliff faces.
Ōpunakē Beach is generally considered a safe place to swim, known for its safe swimming areas and being patrolled by surf lifesavers during the summer.

In the summer the beach is amazing with lifeguards active during the summer and on a sunny day it'll be packed. You'll struggle to find a park down the hill but don't worry because there's plenty more parking up the hill. They also hold a beach carnival with food stalls and a miss opunake pagent. The dairy is only open during the holidays and their beach camp is big and modernized hut prices have definitely gone up in recent years.
