Read moreThis is a nice village to walk through that also leads to the gorge hike that I was aiming for. Worth the stop.
The village itself is pretty easy to get to. Punch it into your GPS and it will take you up a zig-zag of paved roads to the top. On the last zig-zag, follow the road further up into the mountain and you will pass a "tourist parking lot" that's also next to a graveyard. Go pass that parking lot and you'll hit the location of the Misfat Old House. Park here (or at the tourist parking lot) and meander around the village to get a feel for the mud and stone houses and the closely-knit neighborhood of alleyways that feel like a maze.
If you see red, white, and yellow markers, follow them to navigate your way through the attractions (explained on a large sign in English on the side of a building in the village).
The Al Mazare gorge hike starts at Misfat Al Abriyeen village. The trail for it was hard to find for me... I actually just stumbled upon it and kept going. The best way for me to describe it was that I went to Misfat Al Abriyeen, headed "down" toward the gorge area until I noticed green dots and yellow-white-red markers, then headed upward (north) and parallel to the gorge.
This was a long gorge hike but amazing. There's NOTHING out here but the trail, the gorge, and the river down below. Follow the green dots (with the occasional yellow-white-red markers). It is very remote and obviously has great views of the gorge as you go along. If you follow it to the end, there is a yellow-white-red marker that's shaped like an arrow to turn you around... but I never found where the path continued, so I went back the way I came. Also, at about the middle point of this hike, there is an aqueduct that runs parallel to the trail. If you followed this aqueduct from the village OR went off the gorge trail to go down, and then follow THAT north, you will be able to access a hidden wadi which is amazing and pretty remote.
The wadi made the hike...
Read moreMisfat Al-Abryin village is one of the beautiful archaeological villages in the state of Al-Hamra. It is located in the middle of the central mountain in the state of Al-Hamra, which is part of the extension of the Hajar Mountains and is no more than five kilometers from the center of the state through a paved road that cuts through the mountain range. Misfat al-Abryin was named because the winds blow on it from three sides, and the houses in the Misfat al-Abryin village are lined up in one row, which are mud houses, and overlook the palm and lemon farms that are cultivated in this place. This beautiful village, with its farms and mud buildings, has a different engineering system, as old houses are lined up, side by side. One of the most famous and oldest archaeological houses in the Misfat al-Abryin village is the al-Baitin house, which dates back 200 years and rises to more than two floors and is still preserved in its shape to this day despite the climatic factors and the passage of years. In the village there is also the al-Misfah falaj, which is an old engineering and is considered one of the most magnificent falaj in construction. The direction of the falaj has not changed until today due to its inclusion in all parts of the village. The al-Misfah falaj flows into a large basin in the middle of the...
