The terraced fields viewpoint and rose gardens in Jebel Akhdar are truly surreal destinations. With the intense heat and humidity across most parts of Oman, this place—despite being sunny with a touch of humidity—feels like a haven.

Lush green vegetable farms, flowing falajs (streams), and a breathtaking abundance of pink rose bushes (known in Tamil as panneer rose—famous for their rosewater fragrance) create a mesmerizing sight. Almond, fig, apricot, and pomegranate trees add to the scenic beauty, making it both a feast for the eyes and a serene retreat. The roses grown here are used to produce authentic, historical rose water through the traditional fire-steaming method.

It can get a bit crowded—understandably, as everyone wants to escape the scorching heat—but there are plenty of peaceful spots to be found. True to its name, it is a terraced garden. The area hosts three authentic Omani villages, where visitors can start their trek from this viewpoint, walking up and downhill until reaching the third village or stopping at any point along the way. It’s a bit tiring but absolutely rewarding once completed. The rose gardens are nestled in the second village.

Although Jebel Akhdar is at a high elevation, summers here are not particularly cool, so wearing light yet modest clothing is advisable, as local families still reside in the villages. A good pair of shoes—preferably hiking shoes—is recommended. Carry plenty of water—while there are cafés in the villages, it’s best to have your own supply. Packing a few sweets, protein bars, or Gatorade is a smart idea, especially if you don’t plan to trek much.

Children can also enjoy this experience, as there are well-paved paths and even the famous stairs in the second village.

You will need a 4x4 to reach to Jabal Akdhar!!

This is undoubtedly a must-visit spot in Oman!. Just make sure to check the flowering season of the roses—you’ll...

Absolutely a treat to watch I fell in love with place instantly, those who live nearby are blessed to have such a majestic viewpoint, the ones who travel from far get refreshed once the glimps of the view comes to sight. Roads are good, one needs to be careful at corners, plenty of road ahead signs make it a smooth ride. Locals with their stalls are welcoming. Pomegranate, figs, olives and other fruit were in plenty there. Such places must be maintained and promoted for tourism. I would highly recommend the place.
