Now managed by the national historical commission of the government.
A good note from Wikipedia. And I qoute, The overall style of the church can be viewed as neoclassical with the unembellished front facade. Dividing the front facade plane are four sets of Tuscan pilasters. The central division contains the main entrance while the end divisions contain two niches accommodating the Blessed Virgin and Sacred Heart of Jesus icons.
Three stained glass windows puncture the facade of the upper level. This fenestration indicates a choir loft located inside. The side windows are capped with crests of the Pope (on the left) and the Augustinians (on the right). On the uppermost part of the front facade is a niche which contains a statue of St. Barbara.
The convent resembles Moorish architecture.
In 1991, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared Santa Barbara Church and Convent as a National Landmark. The church was the site where General Martin Delgado of the Visayan Revolutionary Government started the junta that resulted to the first Cry of Revolution against the Spaniards outside Luzon.2 It was also used as the general headquarters and military hospital of the revolutionary forces.
The National Museum declared Santa Barbara Church as a national cultural treasure in 2013. A historical marker was unveiled in...
Read moreBefore flying back to Manila, attended Sunday Mass at the Molo Church. There was a lot to be thankful for, the great vacation, the marvelous people we interacted with and the fabulous experiences we had. It is my practice whenever I enter a new church to pray for 3 wishes (one for the world, one for the country and one for my family) followed by 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys and 3 Glory Bes.
Molo Church is also known as Sta Ana Parish.
St Anne is married to Joachim. She is the mother of Mary, therefore she is the maternal grandmother of Jesus Christ. St Anne is the patron saint of Molo so Molo Church is dedicated to her. The Parish is known to be the "feminist church" giving emphasis and recognition to female saints as 16 statues line up the sides of the church leading to the altar. If you go to any church here in the country most of the church lay workers and servers are female so there is wisdom in choosing to be female centric.
The Molo Church was constructed in 1831. It is the only Gothic style church in the country outside of Metro Manila. It is said that Dr Jose Rizal visited here in August of 1886 to view the biblical paintings which are no longer around at this time. In 1992, the National Historical Institute declared this as a...
Read moreThe elegant church with Gothic design dominates the skyline of Molo and with spires that can be seen from miles away. The architectural designs of Iloilo's churches are distinct from one another and Sta. Ana Parish or Molo Church is a standout. One can feel the solemn, feminine charm of the Molo Church as the lineup of all-female saints greet you along the aisle.
The history of this church included the visit of national hero, Jose Rizal, while his Dapitan-bound ship had a brief stopover at the Port of Iloilo. Of all the churches in Iloilo that he could visit: it could be San Jose Placer at Plaza Libertad whose patron saint was his namesake or Jaro Cathedral where his comrade in the Propaganda Movement, Graciano Lopez Jaena, was baptized yet he chose the church of the women!
The adjacent Convento de Molo had a major renovation. It looked as if it was newly-built. I didn't have the chance to peek what's inside but I know that the parish office is there. The Adoration Chapel is located nearby. It was almost as big as Jaro Cathedral's...
