I recently had the pleasure of visiting the National Railway Museum in Entroncamento, and it was an absolute treat for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. If you have a passion for trains and are eager to delve into the rich history of Portuguese railways, this museum is an absolute must visit.
One of the highlights of the museum is the opportunity to step inside old carriages and gain a fascinating insight into how trains appeared in the past. The museum is thoughtfully organized, providing a comprehensive narrative of Portugal's railway heritage.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of bringing along my 7-year-old nephew, and he had an absolute blast. The museum offers an engaging experience for young visitors as well. My nephew was thrilled to explore the various exhibits, interact with the displays, and get a sense of what it was like to be aboard these historic trains. However, the highlight for him was undoubtedly the train ride at the end of our visit. It was a delightful way to conclude the museum experience and left a lasting impression on both of us.

It is cleverly presented on the site of a historic railway hub (Entroncamento) with fascinating exhibits ranging in size from a paper ticket to railway cars. The history of Portuguese rail is brought to life in this place and we loved it. The highlight was the railway simulator where a local company of software and hardware engineers have adapted the controls of a 1970s passenger train to work with a driver training simulator so that you can watch the screen in front of you while you “drive” the train.
