King D. Afonso III ordered the construction of a castle over the ruins of the ancient Roman fortress. By order of King D. Dinis, in 1312, the castle was reconstructed, during the same epoch as the erection of the keep tower and the fortification wall and towers. In 1418, King D. John conceded privileges to the castle and obligated travelers between Alandroal and Vila Viçosa to pass through the settlement, as a way of expanding commercial activities in the town. By the end of the 15th century, the construction of the keep tower was completed.

I think you learn more if you go to small out-of-the-way places but if you go to the places that are so crowded with tourists, you couldn’t ask anybody a question if you had to. The people working in the museums and castles that are less visited are very helpful...
