🟨 My friends, husband and myself have been to Kim Choo Kueh Chang at 111 East Coast Road countless times over the years.
🟧 We used to eat frequently at their 1st level restaurant years ago, but their eatery has since been shut. ● The restaurant has been replaced by a space selling all kinds of Peranakan artefacts, including Peranakan-designed crockery and cutlery.
🟪 Our favourite buys at Kim Choo shop are = the myriad of Nonya Kueh, the Kueh Chang, the golden agar agar of old, the rempah pastes in jars, the Png Kueh, mini Soon Kueh, Kueh Lapis and the keropok ( esp the belinjau crackers).
🟫 There is a heritage gallery upstairs. They used to have a retail store on the 2nd floor that sells sarong kebayas, kasut manek, and various Peranakan artefacts etc.
✳️ All in all, I highly recommend this Peranakan shop if you wish to try Peranakan Nonya Kueh Kueh.
🟡 I haven't been to Kim Choo Kueh Chang for a while, but I will be heading there soon as the East Coast area now have MRT stations.
🟣 Attached are throwback photos over the years when we had gone to Kim...
Read moreA Peranakan joint that sells Peranakan snacks and artifacts like the colourful Peranakan porcelain and tiles. Previously the artifacts section on the ground floor was a Peranakan restaurant and the retail section was on the second floor. The restaurant is now converted into a retail shop and linked to the second floor through an internal staircase. The Peranakan shop has a nice range of porcelain and nyonya beaded slippers. A round wooden white marble table is a nice touch for those who want to soak in the Peranakan ambience which we did. It was comforting.
For a good many years, my family like the nyonya snacks especially the yam cake which we used to pre-order. Today, we bought the Ondeh-Ondeh, Ang Ku Kueh (our perennial favourite is the green bean paste filling), and the nyonya rice dumplings. This time round, the Ondeh Ondeh was a tat disappointing as the coconut filling was not juicy enough. The Gula Melaka (palm sugar,) was solidified and didn't burst when we bit into it. Will warm up the next lot melt the...
Read moreThis place and brand is an icon of the East but they have to be careful with regards to the quality of their products. Yesterday evening, my wife bought some of the nine layer kueh. We were hungry and wanted to eat a piece before our dinner.
To our horror, we found that it was rancid and have to spit it out while I was driving the car. Unfortunately, I digested some of it as I was focused on driving the car and today, I am having diarrhea and upset stomach all morning.
We did return to the shop and returned the kueh and got our refund but I think the Management have to be more careful with regards to their products and ensure that they are all edible.
Please put extra care in quality control and have the staff check the food properly before putting them on sale to avoid giving our tourists poor impression of our Singapore...
