You can see why this place has 5 star reviews. The owner, Urban, is such a welcoming and friendly host who speaks impecible English. We had a short tour around his cellars before starting the wine tasting. The pours were very generous and the meat/cheese board was delicious. The wines themselves were all amazing, all very different to each other. We were a big fan of the zelen, a wine distinct to this region, and also really liked the orange wine (called so due to its colour not the flavour!). We ended up staying there for a few hours, talking, eating and drinking. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and a very enjoyable afternoon. We bought some wine to take with us for the rest of our trip!
Thank you Urban!
Tours are from 1PM. Call up beforehand to check if there's space though.
We walked from Vipava but you can cycle there too (although after a lot of wine tasting this may be slightly dangerous).
Vegetarian options for the snacks were available.
We thought we were going to visit loads of wineries in one day (as we have done in other wine regions) but we ended up only visiting two because it was so nice just speaking with the owners (and other guests) and chilling at each...
Read morePositive: Nice wine cellar, good wines and quality platter of meet/cheese. The owner *8th generation, is a nice guy. The cost of wines is between 7-12 euro per bottle.
Cons (work points): I believe the pricing of the tasting is a bit to high at 20€/person, the glasses are ~5cl filled. For a total price of 55 euro, you can actually buy a bottle of each wine (6 in total). The place is becoming touristy, I noticed this during the wine tasting that the owner avoided redoing the full explanation of wine making (not surprising as this was probably his 1000th time to organize the tasting), questions where always answered, but we had to ask them. When you buy some bottles, you actually still have to pay for the tasting again indicating the touristy effect. You pay to taste the wines, which you need to buy the wines. A generous gesture of the owner would be to eliminate the tasting cost if you buy x...
Read moreWine-tasting that felt like a visit to a good friend’s place. We spent over two hours, with good food (nice cheese and home-cured meats), good company (Urban and the other guests) and great wines. Those made with local grape varieties were quite unlike anything we had tried before. It was hard choosing our favourites and thus which bottles to bring along, so we just went for “all of them”. The vinjak deserves special mention - that stuff is divine!
Normally bringing kids along to a wine tasting is a bit of a challenge, but in this case our kids enjoyed themselves too. Urban served them grape juice, we all toasted and the kids enjoyed that they could be part of the whole experience. They played outside a bit, it was all just so relaxed.
Worthy of all the five star reviews so happily adding...
