At the heightened time of political unrests, resistance and revolt against the fascist apartheid regime in South Africa, churches used to be meeting places for the anti apartheid activism. People would be mobilised to resist apartheid. The gatherings would be initiated by either students or civil or political organisations... Regina Mondi in SOWETO was one such church. Not that the church was playing a role of influencing people, but church halls were use for venue... Roma in Small Farms Evaton was also rendezvous for political movements... Like Morris Isaacson High School, where the June 16, 1976 student uprising started... Church ministers, like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, would be seen in between the police and the revolting crowds trying to plead with the police not to use excessive force when dispersing the gathering crowds. In those scenes then, violence would erupt, the police would be seen hitting people with sjamboks. People getting injured, apprehended and detained without trial by police... Regina Mundi, a tourists attraction features a lot in the rich history of SOWETO.

Quite amazing being here, feeling the energy of the "People's Cathedral". Gave me chills seeing the bullet holes. Standing in the same spot where some of the most influential people of the anti-apartheid movement, and those still fighting injustice today, have stood. The Black Madonna is beautiful addition to this church, if you look closely, details of the community are present.

So glad we stopped by this church. They say it was one of the places that egged the revolution on for the downtrodden of Soweto. It was so beautiful inside, I hope it continues to stay full with the faithful. The surroundings are a little sad (poverty). The stained glass inside the church was amazing. Images of Mr Mandela leading people, mixed in with religious.

Regina Mindi is a Roman Catholic church situated in Rockville Soweto. The church is famous for hosting political gatherings during the peoples struggle against apartheid. This historical church is easily accessible by public transport. There's even a municipality bus stop less than 500 meters away. In front the church there's public park (Thokoza Park) where Soweto residents relax and rewind. Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, was once the resident priest...
