While the pedestrian gate is locked and the road gate is closed (with a "no entrance" sign), you can walk through the latter to enter. The badkloof trail was badly damaged by the winter flooding so we were advised to follow the bloupunt trail and then we came back along the congmanskloof trail, a nice leisurely 2 hour round trip. The first section follows the river bed and requires some scrambling etc and a steep climb to the ridge to return. We understand they're hoping to reopen the badkloof soon. Entry fee 56 rand pp (although he intonated only to pay if we were happy with the trails, which we were). There are two shallow fords to cross so waterproof footwear...

We started at Avalon Springs but they said to follow the path and it takes you up to the Cave... its doesn't. You go through the parking lot, turn left and go through the large silver gates (sign says Moutain Reserve). Follow the path till you get to the river where you see on your right, there are stones going across the river like a path (10m after the blue pipes). There's a large stone with a black arrow pointing the way across the river. On the other side, there's a sign with an arrow leading the way up the mountain to the stairs. From there, it's pretty easy to find your way. Hope this helps the...

End June 2023: First attempt was to start this walk from the Montague Springs side. Here there was no money to be paid and the dog was welcome (maybe more a case of Montague Springs staff not caring). But, I suspect due to recent heavy rains, I could not find my way after crossing the river a few times. The path close to Montague Springs is not well sign posted. On the other side by Joubert park, the dog was not welcome and money had to be paid. Looks like a nice walk, but can be...

Such an amazing trail. We only hiked as far as Vlermuis Waterfall. The trail is easy enough for novices and pretty clearly marked. Vlermuis Waterfall was great... the kids loved it. Our return trip took us up over the kopple towards Cogmans Trail, but we headed down towards Piet-se-pad and back to the caravan park. We walked almost 10km... and our 10 to 14 year old kids were fine with it.

Awesome short trail to do, especially for an unfit person like me. Pretty flat and brilliant views. We started at Avalon Springs and just about 100 metres in you get a sudden silence, so peaceful. If you're into rock climbing there is also a spot or 2 for climbing. Definitely going to do this trail again when I am back at Avalon springs, I might even take the steps up to the cave.

Check the weather before you try this one. It was raining the day before and it turned a greater part of the trail into a sticky, muddy marsh. I attempted it from both ends but could only get about 1km in before the trail was washed out. It is nice and cool in the ravine but come with waterproof boots because even with the sandbags they placed down, you will get muddy.
