Iron Throne Hiking Trail Review
The Iron Throne Hiking Trail is a 6.5 km loop that doesn’t just take you to the top of the mountain—it sweeps you around it in the most dramatic fashion imaginable. From start to finish, this trail offers a full-circle adventure, both figuratively and literally.
The journey begins with a straightforward climb up the mountain. Shade comes and goes, teasing you just enough to make you appreciate it when it’s there. The ascent is no small feat, but every step is a victory as you inch closer to the summit. Once you’re on top, the rewards are more than worth the effort.
Here, the trail loops around the mountain, offering jaw-dropping views from every angle. On one side, the serene dam glistens under the sun, while on the other, a vibrant tapestry of fields stretches as far as the eye can see. The drama of the landscape will have you pausing often—not just to catch your breath, but to marvel at the beauty surrounding you.
At the summit, the real indulgence begins. A lively entertainment area awaits, complete with mouthwatering pizza and refreshing drinks. The vibe is infectious, and if you’ve enjoyed a few too many drinks (say, two or three), there’s a cable car ready to whisk you back down. It’s the perfect blend of thrill and convenience, especially if you’re feeling a little too "refreshed" to take on the descent.
When you’re ready to complete the loop, the trail takes you down the other side of the mountain. The descent is steep and slippery, so grippy shoes are essential. As you make your way down, the trail meanders through a mix of small rocks and sandy stretches, testing your reflexes and balance. It’s a descent that feels as long as the climb but rewards you with the satisfaction of conquering the full loop.
By the time you reach the zip at the base, you’ll have experienced the full drama of the mountain—from the climb, to the summit, to the descent. This trail isn’t just a hike; it’s an adventure packed with breathtaking views, indulgent pit stops, and just the right amount of challenge to make every...
Read moreThe entrance was R75. The trail was short, but it was quite challenging (not for the beginner or unfit). The trail up and down in total is like more or less 7 km. But don't underestimate the short trail; it wasn't only the slippery rocks and steep terrain. But also interesting trail that somewhat you had to push yourself harder. It was good! Anyway, do not come here wearing takkies; you probably will roll down unnecessarily. Come in a pair of hiking shoes with a good grip!
Mostly the trail had some shades. So the heat wasn't that bad. Except like 1 km before you reach the top on the way to the restaurant side, it was hot! No shade at all; bring a hat just in case. But I'm telling you the view from the top was breathtaking! All the effort paid off!
We were being unfortunate when we reached the top; the restaurant was about to close due to some electricity issue.
Another letdown that day was much rubbish we found on the trails: snack packages, cold drink cans, and water bottles. Some people really were irresponsible; they probably need to be stricken a bit, like give some fine to whoever is literring the area. Since it might affect the wellbeing of the wild animals and the plants on the trail itself. Cmon guys, be sporty, be responsible; don't damage this...
Read moreVery challenging, Short, steep, epic scenic route! Would highly recommend trying this. my distance on watch showed a 4km, but most poeple estimate an approx 7km route. You have to be fairly fit, but most people would be able to hike this. Hiking pole: I walked without one, but can imagine how this could be helpful for many people. The view is constantly incredibly beautiful - so rewarding to hike up and end up at Harties Cable way to enjoy an awesome meal and beverage on top - with another solid stunning view! You can hike back down, but I took the Open cable cart down @R360 pp. Was so blessed to experience this! Would do it again and again :) Entry R75: cash or card. Guy at reception was friendly & helpful. I parked and paid at Iron Throne adventures,...
