One of the biggest attractions of Hermanus are the Beaches! WHITE SANDS AND ADVENTURE APLENTY
A stunning, wild coastline connects Hermanus’s beaches, where white sand, rocks, grassy terraces, lagoons and rolling waves greet families, couples, surfers and those who want to simply kick back and enjoy the view.
Voëlklip Beach A number of benches provide ideal spots for whale watching.
Kammabaai Also known as Nanny’s beach, Kammabaai is popular with young families. Kids love playing in the rock pools and climbing the rocks; teens love swimming, surfing and body boarding, while mom and dad relax on the grass under the Milkwood trees. The cliff path runs right alongside it, and in fact will take you all the way back to Hermanus which is about 10 km from here.
Best for: known as Nanny’s beach, Kammabaai is popular with young families. It’s also a popular spot for surfers.
Grotto Beach This blue flag beach is widely regarded as one of the most striking in South Africa (it’s also the longest in Hermanus) with rolling waves and a mountainous backdrop. Swim, sunbathe, play beach games or go for a long, romantic walk with your toes sifting the white sand. There’s even a play park for children and a beachside restaurant.
Best for: for walking a dog come enjoy good...
Read moreThe beach deserves the "Blue flag" because it is beautiful. The parking spaces can fill up quickly especially as one enters the beach from the restaurant side. However, just drive along and you should find a space towards the exit where the braai spots are located. The security is very good with visible law enforcement. However, I was confused about the big "no dogs sign" but people were walking around with dogs. As a dog person myself, these signs confused me when I saw all kinds of dogs on the beach front. There are many activities like "rock climbing" more like artificial rock climbing. The life guards are always on duty even on quiet days. A soft swirl cone will cost you 20 bucks (R20) and the only place to get food and drinks is at the restaurant and beach front bar. So, bring your own snacks / eats if you want to avoid the buzz at the restaurant. Also, the locals surely know their gusty wind so they must tell us the best times to be on the beach to avoid...
Read moreWe drove through Hermanus with motorhome, on our way to De Kelders. It was the first time we took the Grotto Beach road and was surprised with the wide open beach of Hermanus, unlike the rocky shore at the centre of town. Because it was lunchtime, we were pleased to find the picnic spot for day visitors, just left of the main beach. No charge. Green grass - although uncut. A bit of shade. Built-up braaivleis places and water taps. Only one family busy with a braai. After we parked the motorhome, we were as surprised to find the dripping cage, covered with ferns. Very pleasant scenary. We had our lunch & a short nap - all benefits of a motorhome! Will visit again and...
