Read moreI've been to the peak of Tibidabo before, but like most mountain(?) peaks, it's about the journey and less about the destination.
From my previous experience years ago, I was able to access the bottom of the public park that surround Tibidabo via public transit. As an English speaker, it was a bit more tough. It is important to note that a public bus route runs to the top of Tibidabo, but Timmy don't play that game.
Most recently, I decided that I would run uphill, from a hotel, that I shouldn't have run from without GPS and an international data plan. Naturally, this didn't stop me from exploring much of the uphill foot travel.
So from urban jungle, to dense brush, to hilly roads, and finally to a monastery/amusement park/cafe did I arrive. The top of this hill overlooks the cityscape, the skyline, and the dazzling mixture of ocean, cloud, and sky. I wanted to see it all.
My recommendations for getting to the top are to preplan your trip. A network of trails encompasses Tibidabo like a map maker plotted roadways and trails with boiled spaghetti. Or the map maker planned out the streets of Boston. I took a more direct route with a less traveled trail. After a while, the less traveled trail turned out to be no trail, so I did the smart thing and continued upward, instead of turning around and taking well traveled foot paths.
Upon my ascension to the halfway point of the peak, I found an intersection of well traveled paths, along with several bicyclists going up and down. This park is bizzaayyy. This requires good situational awareness, as one could easily connect in the wrong way with a fast bicycle, ouchies.
I was fortunate enough that my run up a hill that included steep slopes and thornbrush did not require me to test out the emergency response and public health system of Barcelona. However, I did get to finally reach the top of Tibidabo, and was only more in awe of all that still had to be explored.
The sanctity of a castle-esque church, and the energy of its neighboring theme park is still an interesting dynamic and energy. To be there is the only way to experience the almost cosmic duality situated at the top of a tall hill, and overlooking a city with so much creative force and geopolitical undertones that you'd have to spend moments studying the sidewalks of the urbane, and the slopes that the pigeons awkwardly...
