Getting longer every month!

Bit hard to know where to say that this coastal path begins and ends, as it is nearly 20 km long along the seafront in Estepona municipal area, but not totally continuous.

The coastal path - meant for both walkers and cyclists - will, once it is completed, be about 30 km long. It is in fact part of a much bigger project, the Senda Litoral de Malaga, that hopes to have the whole of the coastline of the province of Malaga linked via seafront promenades in towns and these coastal paths.

At the moment the Estepona portion is about 20 km long, but not all in one go. There are some stretches, then it stops. Why? Because a river gets in the way (building a bridge, even a footbridge is pricey), or because the next bit of land is privately owned and negotiations are needed, or because the shoreline is high and rocky. Or possible, as I reckon for one stretch, because its projected path is alongside the Naturist Beach . . .

However, by Spring 2021 several new sections had been opened, so that you could go all the way from the Marina to the Guadalmansa river, a good 14 or so km in all.

This is very good news for people staying in Alcazaba Beach, Bahía de La Plata, Mar Azul, or the Kempinski as it now means that you can go safely and pleasantly on foot all the way to town., with lights all the way at night.

Mere mortals content with an hour or so to spare (double that when you walk back), will find this an attractive place to work off the extra kilos from all those plates of fried fish. Walking from the eastern end of the Paseo Maritimo seafront promenade to the open-air statue museum at Playa del Angel is particularly recommended.

For a longer walk, you can also walk all the way from the other side of the H10 Hotel, over the Guadalobon footbridge, past the H10 to the Playa del Cristo through the Marina, along the lovely seafront promenade with its flowers, cactuses, benches, chiringuitos and trees to the very end, by the 3 or four little bars there.

You then see the boardwalk that goes from the end of the paved Paseo Maritimo seafront promenade right round past the flats and past the Carrefour, until it comes out at the pretty gardens by the Playa del Angel with its statue museum and picnic benches. It's a lovely stretch!

Walk along the Playa del Angel then turn left between orange trees. You'll come to a footbridge. As you cross it, note the old water wheel and 19th century aqueduct, remnant from when this area grew sugar cane and needed irrigation.

After the footbridge follow the yellow brick footpath, turn right towards the sea again alongside a row of houses, and finally back along the shore.

You will go past some lovely residential complexes, and the Kempinski hotel, along a very pretty stretch (it's the hotel gardens that you are admiring) to the Playa del Padron, via the new footbridge over the Padron river, by what used to be the pleasant Laguna Beach beach clubs, bars, restaurants and shops, but which were sadly all destroyed by fire on 29/08/2020. Rebuilding is starting soon!

This whole stretch from the Playa del Guadalobon to Playa del Padron will take over 2 hours. The easiest way to go back is to then go under the main road underpass and turn left to the bus stop. (You could pick up a drink or a sandwich in Aldi if you turn right at this point.) If you are splashing out as a treat, however, and while waiting for Laguna Village to be up and running, you could try the beach club in the Kempinski.

At the bus stop, the 79 will not pick you up, but the L2 (every 30 minutes) will, and take you back to town along the seafront to the marina.

If you are a really keen walker, then after the Playa del Padron you can keep walking for another biggish stretch, up to...

I can't give it a 5 star rating just yet, although I hope to be able to in the future. You see, it's not yet finished, so you get an hour or so of walking (a lot less in some places, more in others) and then have to stop or turn back. But that said, it's a great project and the bits that have been completed are generally well done and very attractive walks, with good landscaping often. So well worth finding the stretch nearest to you and getting walking or riding (bike not horse or...
