Portillo Alto — Attraction in La Orotava

One of the most gruelling things I've ever done. Physically and mentally. Climbing to the summit was demanding but oh so rewarding. The first 5km from the beginning of the trail was fairly straight forward. The last 5.5 km got more and more difficult the higher I hiked. After reaching the first 'hut', the terrain became extremely difficult - I'm not sure if it was because of the meters above sea level (2900-3000m) which made it difficult for me to breathe. Nevertheless, once I reached the cable car station, I made the grave error of taking the wrong path around the summit instead of up to the summit - it was only after a km of hiking that I realised I was hiking in the wrong direction. 2 hours wasted really deflated my confidence but I pushed onward and upwards and scaled the last 400-500 meters to the top. We did the mount teide by night tour. It was amazing. From the start our guide Dominic was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about what we were seeing. The sunset was fabulous in the national park and the evening meal was lovely. We then went to two viewing points where he explained all about the planets and constellations. At the 2nd viewing place we were able to look through a telescope. We were able to see Saturn, the moon close up and a star that had hundreds of other stars round it that you can't see with the naked eye. Blankets were provided as it can get cold. Una tappa obbligata per chi decide di visitare Tenerife. Il parco nazionale del Teide è probabilmente l'attrazione principale dell'isola. Per chi decide di visitare la zona della caldera consiglierei, se dotati di auto, di risparmiare i soldi per un tour in pullman. Nonostante le guide siano molto esaustive, molte delle informazioni possono essere reperite preventivamente su internet. Inoltre girando autonomamente tutti i punti più interessanti e panoramici ( consiglio di studiare preventivamente il percorso che si vuole fare) non si è costretti a seguire una tabella di marcia con tempi serrati e si può godere degli splendidi panorami in tutta calma. Unico inconveniente è dover percorrere la strada, un pò stretta ma ben asfaltata, nel tratto dove le nuvole rendono la visibilità molto ridotta, specialmente per chi sale dal lato Nord. Per chi decide di salire fino in vetta è necessario pagare la funivia che non è proprio economica ma vi farà risparmiare circa 5 ore di salita in carenza di ossigeno raggiungendo in 8 minuti circa quota 3555. Da considerare che se c'è vento o maltempo la funivia interrompe il servizio e si rischia di non poter salire, oppure di dover scendere a piedi se già in quota. Per raggiungere la vetta, e salire per i restanti 300 metri circa, è necessario richiedere almeno 2 mesi prima il permesso (gratuito) all'ente del parco. Chiaramente è necessario equipaggiarsi con abiti pesanti da montagna anche d'estate, sia contro il freddo che contro l'esposizione solare. Nel complesso un'esperienza che...
