It is quite an uphill walk, unfortunately it isn't conditioned for wheel chairs or for people with mobility issues. There wasn't anyone to explain anything about the castle, apart from tourists and visitors to the site. It would be problematic to take small kids to visit the castle. The Tourist Information Center was closed and we could get any information about the castle. The highlights for me were the views and the beautiful narrow lanes on the way up, superb!! This castle is located in the upper side of the old town in Vilafamés, a medieval town in Castelló Region, in Spain. It was built between 12th and 14th centuries, but it was remodelated in 19th century. In fact the main tower was built then.
Nowadays, you can walk inside the castle but unfortunately it was not very well preserved, so you can see some walls and the main tower, and from here very nice views of the surroundings (town and mountains). Entrance is free.

El castillo de Villafamés (Provincia de Castellón, España), está situado en lo alto de la villa. La cimentación del mismo así como diversos documentos, que hacen referencia a "Beni-Hamez", indican su origen árabe.
Conquistado por Jaime I en 1233 ha sufrido diferentes reformas a lo largo de su historia, siendo sus vestigidos más antiguos del siglo XIV; momento en que el maestre de la Orden de Montesa obliga a los habitantes de Villafamés a reparar y reforzar las fortificaciones del lugar.
Sufrió importantes ataques durante las guerras carlistas, en el s. XIX, produciéndose así mismo la adaptación del sistema de fortificación a las nuevas técnicas de la guerra, siendo buen ejemplo de ello la torre central de planta circular que pertenece a este momento.
El castillo cuenta con murallas prácticamente completas, y dependencias de carácter palaciego frente a la torre del Homenaje de planta circular, con balcones que estuvieron amatacanados, y que en la actualidad está transformada por una intervención del siglo XIX en la que se añadieron las aspilleras.
