Today we toured the vineyards and winery of Bodegas Riko in Avda Pla de la Sèquia, 33 in Xaló. Wow! What a fun, informative, interesting experience for our whole family. Marina, our tour guide, is a talented, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and personable winemaker and works with her brother, Óscar and her lovely parents.
Marina and Óscar are 4th generation winemakers and are truly passionate about what they do. We saw grape vines that have been producing wine for 70-90 years. After touring the vineyard, we learned about how the grapes are harvested and pressed. We saw the fermentation vats and then went down into the wine cellar to see the giant barrels and clay vases where the wine is stored while it is aging.
During our tour, we learned about the challenges of improving from systemic farming to organic farming. This family has been working hard to protect the environment and eliminate the use of pesticides while simultaneously creating outstanding wines with rich, natural, refreshing flavors.
Marina invited us into her beautiful home and we were able to try 7 different wines and loved them all. She also treated us to some yummy local appetizers to accompany the wine. Our favorite wines are the Renaix La Passió, a fresh dry Moscatel white wine and the Mistela Uva Sombremadura, an incredible, popular dessert wine that is truly delicious and a joy to savor. If you like red wines, Riko makes 2 delightful choices: El Tassolet de Xaló and Renaix De Giró.
If you are in Dènia, Moraira, Calp, Altea or Benidorm for a lovely beach vacation, I highly recommend a tour with the Bodegas Riko Winery and a day trip to Xaló. This family loves their community and works to support other small businesses. In their store, they also have local grown almonds, figs, honey, and delicious jams from...
Read moreWe came for a wine tour and had a fabulous time. It is a family owned winery that is being revived by the next generation, with a lot of great ideas and an ecological approach. One of the owners, Marina, gave us an excellent tour including the history of the region and wine varieties and then we had the actual wine tasting with home made snacks. Delicious and super interesting, with a personal touch and attention that you rarely get these days. If you want an authentic wine tasting of the region with an up and coming winery that are building the future of the wine community in the region, this is the place to visit. Highly recommend. Ps. We bought a LOT...
Read moreI visited this vineyard and the Bodega with some friends. We had a wonderful experience at Bodegas Riko! The walk through the vineyards, learning about the winemaking process, and exceptional wine tastings (8) made it a memorable day. Our tour was given by Marina, who is one of the owners. It doesn't get better than that. Her knowledge of history and understanding comes from growing up at this vineyard. You can feel her passion and love for the land and wine. The warm hospitality elevated the tour to a 5-star day. Highly recommended for wine enthusiasts and those seeking an escape into the history of winemaking in...
