Augusta Raurica is a Roman archaeological site and an open-air museum in Switzerland located on the south bank of the Rhine river about 20 km east of Basel; in the town of of Augst. Acess to the remaining parts of the Roman town is free. The site is open daily 10-17. You can visit the whole site in 4, 5 or 6 hours. If you are interested in the history of the Roman Empire, this place is definitely something for you.

Stunningly well preserved structures & a HUGE abundance of silver treasure were uncovered on this hilltop site. Great museum where English speakers were well catered for which is an all to common a rarity in Switzerland. I found it to be hugely educational & also incredibly serene but I did visit in February when it's likely at its least busy. Well worth the visit if old stuff...
