First-time Visit to Crossroads International Church of Basel – A Mixed but Hopeful Impression
I visited Crossroads International Church of Basel for the first time recently, and overall, I’d say my impression was good — with some areas that could definitely improve.
The service is held in English, which is a big plus, especially for internationals living in Basel. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and there’s even a small café-style “bar” area where people can socialize after the service. (That said, it did feel like you need to be part of the local pharma scene — think Novartis and Roche — to fully blend in. But hey, the coffee was excellent!)
From what I heard, the church hasn’t had a pastor for over a year now and is currently in the process of searching for one. As a result, the service felt more like an “open mic” business meeting, complete with PowerPoint presentations and various people sharing updates. If that’s your thing, you might enjoy it. Personally, I think there's value in some structure and more inspiring leadership during the main service.
A little advice to the elders who are currently leading the services: public speaking is a skill — some are born with it, others can learn it. I’d suggest watching some videos on how to be an engaging speaker, because from where I sat, about half the audience was either asleep or glued to their phones.
That said, the worship band was fantastic — definitely a highlight of the morning. The music was energetic and heartfelt, and they really brought a great vibe to the service.
All in all, Crossroads seems like a nice community with a lot of potential. I give it a pass for now, and I truly believe that once they find the right pastor and add a bit more inspiration and focus to the service, it could be a really great place to...
