I recently visited Huay Kaew Waterfall in Chiang Mai and was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and peaceful it was. Tucked away near the base of Doi Suthep, this waterfall offers a refreshing nature escape right within the city’s reach. What makes it even better is that there’s no entrance fee, making it an ideal spot if you’re exploring on a budget.
The waterfall itself is small compared to others in Chiang Mai, but it has a serene charm. There’s a gentle stream flowing down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a great place to relax, take photos, or enjoy a casual picnic. I saw a few families and locals sitting on the rocks or under the trees, just enjoying the cool breeze and sound of flowing water.
The area is easily accessible and doesn’t require hiking or climbing, which makes it perfect for people who want to enjoy nature without too much effort. It’s also close to other attractions like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Monthathan Waterfall.

Read moreHuay Kaew Waterfall is a lovely little nature escape right at the edge of Chiang Mai city, located within Doi Suthep–Pui National Park. It’s very easy to reach, just a short distance from the Chiang Mai Zoo and the Kruba Srivichai Monument, making it a convenient stop for both locals and travelers. The area is green, peaceful, and perfect for relaxing or enjoying a picnic. You can rent a mat, sit by the flowing water, and just enjoy the cool breeze from the forest.
Even though it’s not the largest or most dramatic waterfall in Chiang Mai, it has its own charm. In the dry season, the water flow can be quite low, but during and after the rainy season (July–November) the stream becomes stronger and more refreshing. It’s a popular spot for families, couples, and solo visitors who want a quick break from the city without having to hike far. There’s also a short trail leading to Wang Bua Ban viewpoint for those who want a bit of adventure.
Overall, Huay Kaew Waterfall is not just a scenic natural spot—it’s a peaceful retreat that’s free to visit, easy to access, and well worth including in your Chiang...
Read moreSpectacular!! Free entry and parking. There is signage around the area leading to the waterfall. Easy enough access to the waterfall though not wheelchair or stroller accessible past a certain point. For a while we had the whole place to ourselves which was magical. Good flow of water today (august 10), I imagine it’s best to visit during rainy season with the most flow.
You can climb up rocks to get closer to the waterfall but be very careful! The rocks are slippery, especially when wet.
Quiet and few people around besides locals having picnics and a tourist every now and then. A must visit while in chiang mai considering how easy it is to get here!
We were able to take a grab there and a grab back. No issues finding a grab from the main road outside the waterfall other than a short wait for them...
