Free to visit museum. Apart from a piece on the ending of the Vietnam conflict, all the audio and audio/visual presentations are in Thai. However, written descriptions are in both Thai and English throughout the museum. There's quite a bit to see here on two floors, and you just follow the one-way route. You have the geological history of the Isan area described at the start. Udon Thani actually means Northern Town. It is interesting to learn about the history of Udon Thani and how it came into existence. I was particularly interested in the influence American had in Udon, resulting from the establishment of military bases in the area. It affected the region both culturally and economically as personnel needed a variety of facilities and services from the local communities. This impact carried forward into the Cold War era where Thai & American governments worked together in deterring the spread of communism in Asia. The museum is free to enter and the staff help visitors with friendly advice. There are white foot prints painted on the floor to guide you through and make sure you don’t miss out on any particular display. The building itself has a sort of French colonial feeling.
