You have the geological history of the Isan area described at the start. Udon Thani actually means Northern Town. It is interesting to learn about the history of Udon Thani and how it came into existence. I was particularly interested in the influence American had in Udon, resulting from the establishment of military bases in the area. It affected the region both culturally and economically as personnel needed a variety of facilities and services from the local communities. This impact carried forward into the Cold War era where Thai & American governments worked together in deterring the spread of communism in Asia. There are white foot prints painted on the floor to guide you through and make sure you don’t miss out on any particular display. The building itself has a sort of French colonial feeling. The displays are modest but interesting giving an important insight into the history of Udon Thani. Give yourself a couple of hours to do justice to the displays and the building. Don’t be afraid to ask questions from the friendly staff, take time to read the info on the displays.
