Medina of Bizerte — Attraction in Bizerte

Off season, November, gorgeous cool day... few people around. The Medina area is very calm. The fort was closed, or we found no way to climb the wall. No admission, just walk right in. There is only one entrance, right beside the very active mosque. It's very calming, a 25-minute walk around, nothing but cats looking at us. The doors and random tile are amazing.

Outside, the area is cute, right by the water, colorful fishing boats. Cafes are all loaded with idle guys, discouraging tourists.

Not a whole lot to see. The old walls are falling down, so lots of new renovation is being done. New concrete doesn't look nearly as good as 1000...

Superbly restored old Kasba, that we call Medina meaning the city in Arabic (Tunisians use another word for city). I think it's not called Kasba like Tunis because Bizerte actually has two: Medina is the larger one, and Ksiba (little Kasba) is on the island opposite to it across the waters of the Old Harbour. Medina used to be a rundown forgotten place, but thanks to the residents, heritage associations and young entrepreneurs, it's become a booming, cool, green and well maintained spot. I'd even say that it's probably the best in Tunisia as you don't get harassed by the souvenirs vendors while you enjoy a modern yet...

المدينة العتيقة ببنزرت، تلك الجوهرة المتوسطية التي تعانق البحر بعبق التاريخ وسحر الألوان. بين أزقتها الضيقة تتراقص ظلال الماضي والحاضر، حيث الأزرق والأبيض ينسجان لوحة بديعة تروي حكايات الأندلسيين الذين سكنوها، والبحّارة الذين عبروا شواطئها، والتجار الذين جعلوا منها ملتقى للحضارات.

بيوتها العتيقة تشع بهدوء البحر، وأبوابها ونوافذها المزخرفة تحكي عن فن معماري أصيل يختزل عراقة تونس وأصالتها. في زواياها تختبئ أسرار الأزمنة الغابرة، وأسواقها تفوح بعطر التوابل والبحر، بينما تمتد المقاهي بكرم أهلها، حيث الترحيب لا يعرف حدودًا.
