The Panagia Theoskepastos Monastery, today known in Turkish as Kızlar Monastery, is a former female monastery built during the Empire of Trebizond. It lies at the foot of Boztepe mountain overlooking the city of Trabzon. The monastery complex built on two terraces, is surrounded by a protective high wall.

The carved temple of Panagia Theoskepastou, a foundation closely associated with the family of Alexius III the Great Komninos (1349-1390), bears the seal of its burial, as is the case with other important ecclesiastical institutions of Trebizond. The temple belongs to a larger monastery complex, located on the slopes of Mount Mithrion, halfway between the port and the acropolis of Trebizond. The walled space, apart from the central cave church, contains cells and smaller temples and houses burial grounds. The role of the Great Komnenoi family and its relationship with the monument was also depicted in a landmark depiction of a temple wall depicting Alexius III the Great Komnenos, his wife Theodora and his mother Irene. The latter was, in fact, represented as the main sponsor, as it held a temple-like image, one of the usual iconographic features of Byzantine landmarks. The most interesting of the tombs is surely of despot Andronikos, son-in-law of Alexius III the Great Komninos, not because of his formation but because of the circumstances of his death. As we are told by the sources of the time, Andronikos was killed very young by falling from a window of the palace in Trabzon and was buried in the narthex of Theoskepastos Monastery.

Kızlar Monastery) — ყოფილი ქალთა მართლმადიდებლური მონასტერი თურქეთში, ქალაქ ტრაპიზონში. მდებარეობს მინთრიონის გორაზე. შემოზღუდულია დამცავი გალავნით. მონასტერი დაარსდა ტრაპიზონის იმპერატორი ალექსი III-ის (მმართ 1349–1390) მმართველობის პერიოდში. ხანგრძლივი ისტორიის განმავლობაში მრავალჯერ გადაკეთდა და საბოლოო სახე XIX საუკუნეში მიიღო. რესტავრაცია:1970 წელს მონასტერი ადგილობრივი ბავშვთა საავადმყოფოს კონტროლის ქვეშ იყო.1978 წელს, თურქეთის ტურიზმის მინისტრმა ნაგებობა დააკონსერვა სამომავლო სარესტავრაციო სამუშაოებისთვის. ფიქსირდებოდა ვანდალიზმის შემთხვევები. 2006 წელს მონასტერში დაიწყო გათხრითი სამუშაოები. 2007 წელს ტრაპიზონის მერმა მოამზადა პროექტი მონასტრის ხელოვნების ცენტრად გადაქცევის შესახებ. მონასტრის რესტავრაცია დაიწყო 2014 წელს. რესტავრაცია გეგმად ისახავდა გამოქვაბულში ნაკვეთ ეკლესიის და ფრესკების აღდგენას. რესტავრაცია დაახლოებით 1.6 მილიონი თურქული ლირა დაჯდა.

A very interesting place. The documentary shown in the dining hall is advised to watch. The place has many stunning views so take your camera along! For those interested in the Byzantine history this place is a must watch. For those who played Painkiller this place will remind you of the Monastery location, but you'll get a real life experience!

Amazing historical site in Trabzon on the hill between Fatih Park and Boztepe. A restored monastery with spectacular views of the city below. If you walk from Fatih Park, the climb is tiring but signage points the way. Ample parking for those who would rather drive. A bargain at 61 TL and a site worth visiting.
