This is the New Source of the Nile Bridge also known as Jinja Nile Bridge and it’s beautiful. It is the new bridge constructed to replace the old one which is aging I’m getting weak. It’s located along the Jinja highway ginger town along the River Nile, the longest River in the world which derives its origin from Lake Victoria which is shared among the 3 East African countries. The bridge is so magnificent that it has very beautiful lighting at night and it’s very good for night driving and it is spacious for both cars and pedestrians which are walking on the sides since their are spacious side walk. The bridge Beautiful and magnificent clear markings that make it easier for your direction of movement and eliminates confusion between drivers and pedestrians. The bridge is so Towering that you can see it from like 10 km before you enter Jinja because it’s very tall and has very beautiful support lines which is designed so perfectly by the most skilled architects and civil engineers. The new bridge is just marvellous.

The Jinja Nile Bridge, also known as the New Jinja Bridge or the Source of the Nile Bridge, is one of the most important modern landmarks in Uganda. It crosses the River Nile at Jinja, near the source of the river, and connects the eastern and central parts of the country. This bridge is more than just a road—it’s a symbol of progress, international partnership, and national pride.

The idea to build a new bridge in Jinja began many years ago because the old Owen Falls Bridge, built in the 1950s, had become too old and unsafe for heavy traffic. That old bridge was narrow, damaged, and under great stress from the increasing number of vehicles passing over it each day. There were also concerns about its strength and safety. Uganda needed a modern, wider, and stronger bridge to handle the traffic and support the country’s development.

Construction of the new bridge began in January 2014 and was completed in October 2018. The project was fully funded by the Government of Uganda with financial and technical support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The total cost was about 112 million US dollars. The Japanese government contributed a soft loan through JICA, which means Uganda received the money on very low interest and with a long repayment period. This project showed the strong relationship between Japan and Uganda.

The construction work was carried out by Zenitaka Corporation and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company, two large firms with international experience in building major infrastructure. The design of the bridge is beautiful and modern. It is a cable-stayed bridge—meaning large steel cables support the road from two tall central towers. It stretches 525 meters (about 1,722 feet) across the Nile and has two traffic lanes, pedestrian walkways, and lighting that makes it glow at night. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in East Africa.

The new Jinja Nile Bridge holds a lot of historical significance. First, it connects Kampala to the eastern and northern regions, and also to neighboring countries like Kenya and South Sudan. It supports regional trade and makes transport faster, safer, and more reliable. Secondly, it replaced a structure that had served Uganda since colonial times, showing the country’s journey from colonial dependency to independent development.

A hidden fact many people don’t know is that the bridge is also a part of the Northern Corridor, one of the busiest transport routes in East and Central Africa. Goods coming from the port of Mombasa in Kenya pass over this bridge as they head to Uganda, Rwanda, DRC, and South Sudan. In this way, the bridge is a vital link in East Africa’s economy.

The bridge was officially opened by President Yoweri Museveni on October 17, 2018. Since then, it has become not just a road link but also a tourist attraction. Visitors come to admire its modern design and take photos with the River Nile beneath it. At night, it is beautifully lit with colors representing the Ugandan flag.

In every way, the Jinja Nile Bridge is a proud symbol of Uganda’s progress—blending history, beauty,...
