Jinja Basecamp is a great setup in a quiet back road just a few minutes from the centre of Jinja. Everyone here has a can-do attitude and are very relaxed. It's a great place to chill out or to use as a base for tons of adventure activities, particularly the white water rafting and kayaking. (Basecamp is the meeting place for Nile River Explorers, one of the first rafting companies). You can also do walks, bike tours and a lot more from this convenient base. The owners and staff know Jinja like the back of their hand so you can rock up here and they'll give you lots of recommendations or make bookings for you. Only had a one night stay here but enjoyed the breakfast. Help yourself to unlimited tea and coffee, fruit and very tasty Rolex (omelette served in a chapati). Basecamp have a range of simple accommodation. In 2020 I stayed in the double room with ensuite bathroom in a large house at the back of the compound. I was exhausted after attending the Nile River Festival and quickly passed out! They have lovely gardens (listen out for the African Grey Parrots flying overhead first thing in the morning) and a swimming pool. It's a great place to lose a few hours over a cold beer. I wrote the above review when I stayed in early 2020.
April 2022 UPDATE. Fantastic to come back to Jinja and see everything and everyone come back to life post-pandemic! I passed by Basecamp twice last week. One afternoon I dropped by for a chat and a snack: home made tortilla chips plus hummus and guacamole dips 😋 I stayed one night in one of the Safari tents. Each has two single beds and was warm and comfy. It's a tight squeeze! The bathroom / shower is a shared affair in the main living area. Note: some of the rooming options changed during the pandemic but it remains an extremely good value for money option for budget travelers. Thank you to the super friendly staff. Had a great welcome. I particularly appreciated being shown my tent during one of Jinja's occasional power outages. (Guests are provided with rechargeable lamps) and the compound has good security. The camp seemed to be a hive of activity. A big group of volunteers had arrived from Europe on the day I stayed. It's wonderful to be traveling...
Read moreWonderful place, beautiful setting, delicious food, brilliant team of great people - all you need for a stay in Jinja! Simple and clean but also has all the important extras in terms of service and hospitality 😊
Stayed almost 3 months with our children (7, 5 and 3) when my husband worked in Jinja. We arranged to book Mountain House with all of its 3 bedrooms, kitchen and multiple bathrooms, which was perfect for us. Comfortable beds, high quality mosquito nets, good showers, nice mood to the house. In the few instances there were any issues with any practicalities in the house, Hanna & Keith were quick to help sort it out. Sharon in housekeeping did a brilliant job of looking after the place and was always willing to help out with extras such as washing of clothes etc.
The plot with garden and pool is dreamy, green and peaceful. I worked remotely from the site and my morning coffee was always accompanied by bird song! Our kids loved the pool which was kept very clean and has a built up side/steps so there was minimal risk of accidental fallings in… also big and deep enough for a cooling dip for adults.
The Restaurant was a big surprise for us - we had not expected it to be that good but it REALLY is. We had probably 2-3 evening meals a week there, never disappointed. Weekly specials always a treat. Keith and his team also helped us create memorable evenings for special occasions such as birthdays, work dinners etc.
We saw so many guests over our time there who were obviously as pleased us as, both travellers and local regulars!
More than anything, Hanna and Keith and the entire team in restaurant, housekeeping and security are great, solid people who seem to enjoy what they do and genuinely care about your experience - not only of the place itself but of Jinja on the whole.
I would give 6...
