The name comes from the word "to bring" and refers to the produce farmers used to bring to sell at Privoz (although at present, the majority of vendors are actually middlemen). Privoz is famous for the variety of foods one can buy, the variety of people (one can find any ethnicity here), and the traditional Odessan humor. If you go inside the fish Pavilion, you will see the statue of Sonya, the Fisher woman (рыбачка Соня), a famous Odessa chanson character. Despite the seemingly lack of organization, Privoz is a pretty safe place and a must-go-to for both locals and foreigners - just follow the usual rules to prevent pickpocketing (try to take ID photocopies instead of originals in case they get stolen, don't take more than 50 dollars worth of cash (in Hryvnia), and don't flash your money. Ah, and never put your wallet in the bag - it can get cut into. If you follow these simple rules, you can going to be as safe as an Odessan, шобы...
Read moreGreat place! One of the main city attractions! The market-legend, the real history of Odesa. Being in Odesa we always visit it to buy some fish or seafood. As well there are vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs and different stuff - Pryvoz is large. Do not miss a chance to visit it, to go through fish rows to see different fish and to see and talk to local women selling it, this is the must, so authentic! But do not mix new Pryvoz with the old Pryvoz - located at the same place they are very different. The monument to Auntie Sonya is located at new Pryvoz (see photo for monument, the entrance is under blue letters), this one is not so authentic and rather standard. You should find the old Pryvoz (see on photo - the entrance is under the white arche with black leters) - ask somebody there for the way. !!!And be careful - keep eyes at your pockets and bags, there are a lot, really a lot of pickpockets, as at...
Read moreHuge market. From food to clothing items can be purchased here. Most of the food items from various sellers were found to be fairly fresh with sometimes price differences for the same item depending on the seller. If you are not in a hurry you can save a bunch by taking time to look all over the market before making a purchase. Inside the market was fairly clean however, some of the streets surrounding the market were littered with refuse that definitely was an eye sore with attention quite needed. In all it was a decent market with different boutiques and restaurants in the surroundings.
Update July 30th, 2021: As an update to my earlier review, a lot has changed in terms of surroundings and stalls added to this market. The changes are remarkable and actually beautify the market! The Tram tracks and stops had been replaced and now it's like night and day compared to what it was when I first wrote my...
